call me controversial, but beauty 100% affects my mental health 👇🏼
at my lowest, I barely washed my hair and barely looked in the mirror
one day I was shopping at Bed, Bath, & Beyond and an older woman came up to me and said to me “hi dear, a little bit of vanity is ok.”
I could’ve been offended by that or felt like she was judging me, but to me she was an angel...
she saw me. she stepped in. she named what she saw.
I left my abusive marriage shortly thereafter...
at that time, I didn’t realize how visible my distress had become
I looked really different when I was in a low place.
I had been neglecting myself…
but after I left, my self-care got better too..
I started washing my hair regularly again, I started wearing clothes I felt good in, and I got my genuine smile back
for me, beauty isn’t about achieving a specific aesthetic,
it’s about genuinely feeling good in my skin
it’s about authentic self-expression
it’s about taking good care of myself 🌸
if you wanna look into this more, there’s a concept in neuroscience research called “neuroaesthetics” (check it out!)
ps- before you ask! Alli used the Dry Style Cream by on my hair.
comment FAVORITES and I’ll send you the link! 💖✌🏼💖
