Meet Coach Diego Barrett!

A five-year Division I pitcher and Banana Ball player, Diego competed at George Mason University and North Carolina A&T, recording 200+ career innings. Throughout his collegiate career, he earned recognition as a Preseason First Team CAA Reliever, Carolina Curve Pitcher of the Week, Cal Ripken League First Team selection, and HBCU Classic participant.

After earning an opportunity with the VISITORS, Diego brought his competitive edge, energy, and personality to Banana Ball. Now, he brings that same passion to Velocity Baseball and the athletes he works with.

Coach Diego’s philosophy is simple: develop the whole player. Through individualized instruction, he focuses on fundamentals, athletic movement, command, pitch development, confidence, and the mental side of the game. His goal is to help athletes understand the “why,” compete with confidence, learn from mistakes, and enjoy the process of getting better.

We’re excited to have Coach Diego as part of the Velocity Baseball coaching staff!

A Disclaimer Every Travel Baseball Organization Should Put in Writing:

To reduce buyer’s remorse, be honest about what travel baseball actually requires.

Travel baseball is a waste of money for an athlete who isn’t committed to developing year-round.

Paying for tournaments, uniforms, hotels and a fancy team name doesn’t make a player better. If an athlete isn’t consistently working on strength, movement, throwing, hitting, recovery and overall athletic development, the money spent on travel baseball is largely paying for experiences—not development.

That’s not an insult. It’s reality.

This is one of the problems Velocity Baseball was built to solve.

2031 Isaiah Laborce moving 310 lb at 80% of his 3RM.

During the season, our goal is to maintain and build strength while managing fatigue, so we’re working at 80% and monitoring bar speed rather than chasing max loads.

After assessing at 350 lb, we’ve progressively increased his 80% load each week while consistently staying above our target velocity range of 0.45–0.55 m/s.

Building force without sacrificing velocity.

The force time curve tells us that the more time you have to apply force to the baseball, the more impulse you can create. Getting into deeper positions during the throw can increase that time and help you throw harder.

But that range has to show up within the throw. Just because you gain more T Spine Rotation doesn’t automatically mean you’ll create more Hip Shoulder Separation. You have to learn how to express those new ranges in the skill (aka the throw)

That doesn’t mean mobility isn’t important, it absolutely is. Think of mobility like a carpenter’s toolbox. The more tools you have, the more options you have while building. But the tools only matter if you know how to use them.

Train mobility until it isn’t a problem, then shift towards learning how to move through the ranges! Then design your throwing work so that you are forced to use new movement solutions!
