A word from Head Coach Jeremiah Hunter:
The landscape of college sports as a whole is currently undergoing a seismic shift. The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision "House v. NCAA" is the next step towards a new reality that began with the legalization of NIL ("name image & likeness") deals for college athletes. The restructuring of conferences, and many schools evaluating their program offerings will especially impact non-revenue sports. That is essentially everything other than football and men's basketball.
College wrestling is facing a very uncertain future. There are some who believe that the NCAA as an organization may actually break up into sport-specific governing bodies. The LeTourneau University Wrestling Club is proud to be a part of the NCWA (National Collegiate Wrestling Association) and the NCWA Southwest Conference which stands ready to be the premier college wrestling organization in the country. Since 1997, the NCWA has been the home of collegiate club wrestling in the U.S., Canada, and more recently Puerto Rico. Whatever happens going forward, student-athletes who wish to wrestle at the college level can be confident that they can find a home with an NCWA member school.
LeTourneau's athletic administration has no plans to add wrestling to the school's NCAA program. And so I am "all in" on NCWA participation. It will be the path for the foreseeable future of Yellowjacket wrestling. And as college wrestling as a whole "grapples" with the changes coming, I see many positives of being under the NCWA. For one, there are no recruiting restrictions. Second, as a coach and program leader, I can be more creative in how I build the program (more on this to come). And for those who choose to wrestle at LeTourneau, your path to compete for a national championship is way shorter, although still a challenging and worthwhile achievement.
