The boys showed up today and ran near the top of the board all night. The goal for tonight was to shake down the new karts and get the boys comfortable in them, and that goal was accomplished and exceeded. Both boys had 3 practice sessions. Lucas went P2 in the first, P5 in the second and P3 in the third. Tyler was able to go P7 in his first session, P5 in the second and P2 in the third.

Memorial Day Weekend marked the return of the 3T and the 13L to the track. This would be one of the few weekends the team had marked on the calendar for the summer racing season. The SRT Spring Challenge would host two full points races over the weekend.

On Saturday we would see 61 entries in the box stock class, where both boys would compete. This was Lucas’s first time running with a little more horsepower. Qualifying would set the field for the remainder of the night. Tyler would go out and set a time of 12.909 and 7th among the 61 karts, where Lucas would turn a lap of 13.547 and end up 39th. With Cycleland format allowing for multiple features, both boys would lock into an A Main event.

Lucas would run a heat race to determine his starting position in the feature, where Tyler would run a trophy dash. In Lucas’s heat race he would start P7. Lucas would cross the line where he started, in 7th place, but his confidence was building.

In Tyler’s trophy dash, he would start 4th. Quickly getting shuffled back to the 6th spot, Tyler would fight back and finish in the 4th spot.

When it was time for the feature, Tyler would start P8 with Lucas starting P13. As the 20 lap race wore on, both kids showed speed and were moving forward. When the checkered flag flew, Tyler would finish P5, and Lucas was close behind finishing P7. Overall a great night for the boys after being out of the seat for a bit.

The team would head home and get a quick nap and a shower before heading back to the track to do it all again on Sunday.

Qualifying, once again would set up the night. Lucas would head out with the first group and lay down a lap of 13.160, nearly half a second quicker than Saturday, and finish in P9. Tyler would have a less than stellar qualifying lap of 13.569, and finish P22. Once again, both boys locked it into a feature event, only this time Lucas was in the trophy dash, where Tyler was not.

Tyler would start 5th in his heat race looking to improve on his night. Finishing in the 5th spot would mean he would start P11 in the main event.

Lucas started P2 in his trophy dash and showed a little inexperience as he would fall back to the 6th spot before the checkered flag. Racing with the fastest kids in a class of kids who may be as much as double his age, he still showed plenty of speed to compete.

Main event time saw both boys once again in the feature. Lucas would start P6, and Tyler would start 11th. On lap 2, Lucas would lose a spot and try to tuck back in line around the bottom. Unfortunately he jumped a right rear tire of the 5th place kart and took a ride into the turn 3 wall. He was able to finish the race with a damaged kart, but it was not the finish he wanted. Tyler would move through the field once again and eventually finish 7th. It was good to dust off the cobwebs and see these kids do what they love.

With the damage to Lucas’s kart, the team is unsure when they will return to the track, but we will be back soon, stronger than ever.
