On Sunday, the 2020 Lodi Mile was to take place on the fabled Hutchins Street Square course, but this year, in the interest of keeping crowd numbers low, it did not happen in its traditional form with all the fanfare, pomp and circumstance. Taking matters into his own hands, Lodi native, firefighter and Lodi High alumnus, Lucas Garrett took the fitness heβd been stockpiling to the line and gave it everything he had for 1609 meters. Heβd set the goal of running under 5 mins after running 5:15 at the 2019 Lodi Mile and he would not be denied his attempt by any force of nature. Garrett, paced by his teammates for just over half of the race, crossed the finish line in 4:49, smashing his previous best. 2020 hasnβt been the year weβd planned for, but on the accomplished list of Lodi Mile winners, Lucas has added the name of the first ever Lodian champion... and heβs taken a 6 pack of beer from race director, .
