Every winter as the days shorten and cold weather creeps across Montana, there is a migration of sorts from creek side to our respective fly tying desks. The purpose of which is to fill the empty spaces of fly boxes after a long season of fishing and guiding.

It all starts with a review of field notebooks from seasons past on the flies we’ve used successfully,and what might be needed for the winter. From there, its an inventory of hooks, beads, and various materials. Bits and bobs to be lashed to iron all in the hopes of convincing a fish its food. The great value of which is catching a fish on something fashioned from our experience by our own hands.

You see a fly is more than an abstraction to hook a fish. It is the fly tyer’s link to the past wrapped in the anticipation of the future. It’s this intoxicating mix of form and function that keeps us migrating back to the fly tying desk each winter.
