Recovery sucks & we (I) don’t talk about it enough.

Last week was a physically hard week because of a tropical depression that blew through and left my knees feeling awful.

I felt like I was making great progress before, but since then it feels like I took 2 or 3 huge steps back.

Things that felt back to normal hurt again.
Exercises across the board drop intensity again.

It’s crazy how easy it is to slip back into feeling the loss, the fomo, and the frustration. Social media is a highlight reel of all the best things, so I sometimes forget to be real about the hard things here, and some days of recovery are just stinking hard.

I’ve been on such a good streak and distracted with work recently, I feel like this bump has knocked some of the wind out of my sails.

The day after the injury I told myself my motto for this recovery would be ā€œone day at a timeā€ and that’s exactly what I’m doing. Take the hard days when they come, roll with the good days, and give each day whatever effort I can to take the next step forward.

Just like in racing… constant forward motion = progress, no matter how fast.

HOW you’re breathing matters😤

For racing that translates into maintaining nasal breathing through the first half of most Deka & Hyrox races.

And for long distance/duration races, it’s even more important!

Next threshold/aerobic session, focus on your nose!

Rewind to May 2022 & my first Deka Strong!

I was brand new to hybrid racing & had next to no experience on a ski erg or air bike!

There was a several zones where technique could’ve been more efficient…

- Zone 3 - stepping up & off facing forward, then turning around every rep.
- Zone 5 - yes, I started with the ski fly!šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø
- Zone 8 - I turned around every rep to pick up the D ball.
- Zone 9 - The handles were on my wrist, not in my hands.

I had zero pacing strategy too because I didn’t know how to race.

We were running on straight vibes!
BUT that race was a benchmark.

It gave me a time to beat & within a year I was able to shave over 2min off my time!

My 2 biggest takeaways…

1. Deka is SO FUN!!
2. I found new purpose in my training: a race to look forward to & a clear goal!

Your first race doesn’t have to be perfect or even fast, but it can be the start line of a new era in your fitness!

What were your biggest takeaways from your first race??

Trust the process🫔

It’s easy to doubt and question yourself on a bad day or when things don’t feel like they’re quite clicking.

Everyone does it, that’s called being a human.

But how you respond makes the difference.

Changing your whole routine or switching coaches when things aren’t šŸ’Æ won’t create the big picture success you want.

Trust your programming.
Trust your coach.
But most importantly trust yourself.
It’s about the processšŸ«¶šŸ¼

15 weeks post op!

We’re slowly ramping up for return to jogging!

I’m still focusing on lots of unilateral strength to close that gap, but it’s fun to shake things up with the ladder drills!šŸ¤˜šŸ¼

I passed the NSCA’s CSCS exam!!šŸŽ‰
(Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist)

I took my first attempt yesterday and passed both halves!

I spent 10 months prepping for this exam and I am so flipping proud of all the learning and the effort I’ve put in to come this far.

I’ve had my eye on this cert since college, but it was always ā€œtoo hardā€ or ā€œtoo intimidatingā€ to attempt. And it was definitely harder and more comprehensive than my CPT (Certified Personal Trainer)! But I wanted to prove to myself that I have what it takes to rise to a new level of expertise to coach the sport I’m wholeheartedly passionate about.

I’m so proud of the work I’ve put in studying and everything I’ve learned on this journey. I was able to go spend a week last fall & a week this spring observing D1 athletes and strength coaches at SFASU. I studied through countless nap times and spent hours watching lectures, listening to podcasts, reading the textbook, and taking practice exams all while being a competitive athlete, coach, going through ACL rehab, and being a toddler mom.

More than anything I’m excited for all the opportunities this will bring and the new level of expertise I can give my athletes now. I’m SO READY to bring them the highest level of coaching & expertise possible so they can perform at the top of their game!

Hybrid Strength is officially a Strength & Conditioning program baby!!šŸ¤˜šŸ¼

It’s never too late to start training like an athlete!

A special shout out to Dr. Matthew Casturo, DPT, CSCS who’s prep course, podcasts, & YouTube channel helped me tremendously in studying! I also used Pocket Prep & loved it!

If you’re close to hitting 620cals you’ve got through Monday to double down!

The challenge is still open too!
Any past race cals burned in August count.

It’s a sprint to the finish, can you hit 620cals before August ends?

Solo V Team Pacing šŸ‘Æā€ā™€ļøĀ Ep8Ā Deka 101

Solo pacing needs to be way different than team pacing.

If you’re used to interval training with 20-60sec rest, that’s great for teams, but less realistic for solos.

Solo pacing should be controlled and steady output, holding back a bit up front to conserve energy for the back half.

Team pacing should be harder & faster because you get rest!

But you still need to be able to output at that high level for the whole race.

So don’t max out at 100%! (Especially in the front half!)

Dial it back to a repeatable, hard effort.
