I’ve been at a much lower capacity this year as I navigate deep grief. When I learned this idea from Oliver Burkeman about creating a DONE list rather than a to do list, I decided to give it a try.

It helped me realize, I’m doing quite a bit in my day even though I don’t feel as productive as our capitalist culture defines it.

A lot of my resources have been used on healing and navigating grief. My days have been slower and part of me was judging myself for this. Creating a DONE list brought me a sense of satisfaction I was craving.

If you’re getting to the end of your day and feeling like you got nothing done- give this a try and see how it feels.

Does life always feel busy? Busy busy busy.

I hear you. I have a full family life. I run a small business and I’m engaged with friends and my community.

But there is something about the word busy that keeps us on this hamster wheel it makes it feel like our life is this unending to do list.

I know that suddenly saying your life is very full, does not take things off of your to do list. But I can shift your attention and your nervous system from running around, trying to gather all the nuts to settling with the abundance of life?

It’s my 50th birthday!!!

25 days ago I decided to foster 50 days of intentional joy. These are just the moment I had pictures of. Amazing times with friends. Beach time. Journaling. Just sitting with my pup. Making super delicious pumpkin soup. Baking pretzels with my youngest.

I have another 25 days to go with so much to look forward to.

One thing I am learning is that creating opportunities for joy has led me to notice more joy in my day and my life.

For my birthday tell me below a recent moment of joy — or if you have a great story of us from a joyful moment, I’d love to hear that.

After what’s been a challenging year, I thought a lot about how I want to celebrate my upcoming 50th birthday. After my brother died, I told a friend “I’m making plans for intentional joy.” She’s become a wonderful co-conspirator.

So I decided the 25 days before and after my birthday, I’m seeking out intentional joy daily in big and small ways.

Today, I spent a couple hours singing with Bobby McFarrin and a room full of new friends. They simply made it up as we went along.

It was a fantastic first day of intentional joy.

How do you plug intentional joy into your day?

When was the last time you checked in with your breath? 😮‍💨

Last night we went to hear James Nestor speak about his finding in his book Breath. I read breath in 2020, during the icky days of covid and smoke days and once again found comfort and healing in this simple respiratory function of ours.

In the swirl of this week’s sh*tstorm of news and the cruelty of the new administration, I’ve been relying on my breath to remain centered and focused on what is most important.

Breathing is the first thing I evaluate and teach new clients. I often say if you want to make a shift in your system, change one of the 3Bs: Body, Brain, or Breath.

Try this for 3 minutes: inhale through your nose, hold for count of 3, inhale, hold, inhale, hold and slowly exhale through your nose.

Congratulations! You just lowered your respiratory rate, heart rate and blood pressure.

If you’d like to learn more about the power of your breath to find calm in the chaos that is now our country, please reach out. I’d be honored to support you.
