Tip Tuesday: Foot to Foot

A few weekends ago I spent several days of our fall break at an indoor Waterpark. We ended up setting up right outside the little kids area near the wavepool for most of our stay.

I personally reunited lost 7 kids who wandered away from their parents. 😳

The consistent phrase that mom or dad said when I walked the child up was, “oh wow, thank you…what happened, you were JUST RIGHT HERE.”

No they werent.

Most were minutes of me asking questions and walking them around.

Most were distracted with another task or another child that allowed the other kid to wander away (especially in such an enticing environment).

This got me thinking of a tip I did with my kids when they were little and I started it again this weekend with my 2 year old niece…foot to foot.

When I’m in an environment where I need my kid to stay close, but maybe I have another task or another child…I use foot to foot.

The kid is tasked with touching my foot with their foot and keeping it there. This way I can feel where they are and can immediately tell if they step away.

I’m putting sunscreen on my face and can’t see you…foot to foot.

I need to give info to my husband….foot to foot.

I need to get a lifejacket on another kid…foot to foot.

As they got older I had them foot to foot with each other so they then reported when the other wasn’t touching.

I realize that my attention and vision is limited, it at the same time supervision around the water is so critical. I know how easily kids wander and how quiet they are. Foot to foot was an easy solution for an additional layer or touch point (literally!) of safety that we used.

Let us know if this tip is helpful or if you do something similar?

“Quick update: 7/8/24 As at this time, we are having the pool open- per calendar hours.”

Quick update: The pool will be closed today (7/7/24) for keyed entry and open swim.

We encountered a mechanical issue that caused the water level to drop, and the chemical balance is currently off.
We are working on resolving the problem and hope to have the pool open for open swim today. We will keep you updated if the pool will be open tomorrow. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Members,
Just a quick heads up, the pool is closed for the rest of the day (7/6/24). We encountered a mechanical issue which led to a drop in the water level, and the chemicals are currently unbalanced.
Assuming no further issues, the pool should be open as usual tomorrow. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Thanks for your understanding.

4 Water Smart Tips for 4th of July

1. Be a “spotter” not just a “watcher”

Think of a “spotter” in gymnastics, they are close in proximity, expecting something to happen, engaged and prepared. That is what effective supervision looks like. Put the phone down, avoid socializing, and make sure you can see everything!

2. Lifejackets for the win

Buckle up and wear a lifejacket. Holiday weekend environments can be more chaotic and distracting. Wear the lifejacket and make sure you and your loved ones get to enjoy another holiday together! Even if they know how to swim, layers are important.

3. Restrict + Monitor Access

Restrict access to the water. Use fences and door / window alarms. Leave the pool fence up to control access during non swim times. Kids can be little Houdini’s so stay alert and control access to the water.

4. Water > Alcohol

Drink the water. Hydration is important, and alcohol is dangerous around the water. We all know of the negative impacts, and so many drownings on holiday weekends are connected to alcohol. Enjoy alcohol responsibly away from the water. It isn’t worth it!
