Fifteen year old Hunter Rohr was fishing during spring break in West Virginia. He and a buddy had been fishing since 7 a.m. and caught a few smaller golden rainbows. Around noon, they found a pile of fish in a deep hole on the South Branch of the Potomac River. Using polarized sunglasses, Hunter spotted an especially large fish holding near a log on the bottom.

He tried many lures. Nothing worked. Finally, he used a single pink steelhead egg that he had cured last year from a fish he caught near Lake Erie. He threaded the egg onto a small hook and sent it drifting toward the holding trout. The trout took the egg. Hunter hooked it. A wild two minute battle began. The fish came up and got its head out of the water, sloshing and fighting a lot. But it was too fat to jump.

Everyone around him went crazy as he fought the fish. His buddy came over to help and netted the trout. Hunter knew it was big enough to become a new West Virginia record. A state biologist officially weighed the fish on certified scales at 11.84 pounds, with a 28 inch length and 19 inch girth. It is currently under review and should replace the current record of 9.72 pounds.s

Art Weston is no stranger to fishing records. He has broken 53 IGFA records, 23 of which still stand. But his latest catch might be his most impressive. Fishing on Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Texas with guide Kirk Kirkland, Weston hooked into a monster. An alligator gar weighing 283 pounds and measuring over 8 feet long. The catch itself is incredible. But here is what makes it legendary. Weston caught it on 6 pound test line. That is fishing line thinner than most shoelaces. A fish nearly 300 pounds on line designed for small panfish. The fight lasted nearly three hours.

Weston let the gar run as much as possible, doing everything to keep the line from snapping. Around the two hour mark, he started to worry. He had lost other fish past that point when lines broke randomly. But this time, luck held. When the gar finally came close to the boat, Kirkland had to rope it, burning his hands in the process. The fish weighed 283 pounds. If certified, it will break the current 6 pound test record of 123 pounds. More importantly, it should break the all tackle world record for alligator gar, a record that has stood since 1951. That fish weighed 279 pounds. Weston beat it by 4 pounds. A 72 year old record. Gone. On 6 pound test. That is not fishing. That is history.
