For the first time ever, I'm sitting by the side while my 5 y/o (skilled just after she turned 2) swims. And oh man is it a nice feeling 🤣 Our skilled littles need us to be hands on for a while, but I'm reaping the rewards of all that work tonight!

*You'll see she's in a wetsuit and goggles. It's winter in Australia and it's cold. I made her swim-float-swim without both earlier today to practice- we haven't been swimming much this winter and I had to reset her float a bit. Use caution with both. Wetsuits are quite buoyant and can create a false sense of security. Goggle dependence can develop fast. She accidentally stepped off the bottom step into deep water when we first got here and had to navigate back to the wall without goggles. She was a little upset because it surprised her, but it felt good to see her problem solve an unexpected situation safely.*

Just to making sure everyone has gotten the memo! I've been sending tons of emails and texts Christine's way! She's going to have a busy summer with you, Little Rock! 🤣❤️ I miss you all. There are so many reasons why we ISR. Since our move, I have been reminded over and over why. There is so much water here. Emma (4.5- skilled just after her 2nd birthday) swam into the country like a native Australian mermaid 🇦🇺 🧜‍♀️ And my 9 y/o is doing surf and lifeguard/water/beach safety prep in a weekly course and thriving.

I know it's only January and you guys are prepping for a cold winter, but don't miss out on scheduling your 2026 refreshers with Cristine ([email protected], ISR Marion, AR ). I wish it could be me, but you're in good hands! Sending lots of love to all of your babies! ❤️

Hi friends! Another update. I'm winding maintenance down a little, but plan to continue to try to offer one evening a week and one Saturday a month for as long as I can going forward. I'll send out an email late this week when spots are open for registration.

The wonderful Christine has committed to coming from Marion to teach at least one 6-week session here in May. If you have a new swimmer or want to make sure you get in with her for maintenance or refreshers, reach out now to get on her contact list. She will officially open her schedule for registrations in November and you want to be the 1st to know because spots will be limited!

Have a wonderful 4th and be careful. Holiday weekends are high risk times, and no child is drown proof.

Assign a sober, undististracted water watcher at all times and switch off regularly- I have water watcher lanyards I'm happy to give you if you're interested! If everyone is watching, no one is watching.

Dress your kids in bright colors.

USCG approved life vests for open water. I also sometimes like to use them on the pool deck (during non-swim times) or beach.

1:1 arms length or touch supervision of your small children in the pool- skilled and unskilled. NO flotation devices in the pool- you're undoing all their hard-earned horizontal skills when you do this.

Direct supervision of your older, more confident swimmers.

Make sure you have a pool fence (gate latched), remove all furniture from outside the fence and toys from the pool when its not in use. Door alarms in use and doors locked with a childproof lock. Block off all pet doors. Learn CPR.

Remember that the highest risk time is when swim time is over. You relax and your kids just want to get back in. Water is like a magnet! Keep a water/kid watcher on duty after swim time.

It's hard to know what to say, but a few of you have discussed this with me. It's beautifully stated here. None of us can watch our children 100% of time. Lead with compassion and love, always. If you're able, a donation to a non-profit in their name could provide life saving lessons for another child. ❤️
