Drills, Tips, and Info for range day I left active duty in 2014 and joined the Army Reserve.

I joined the Army in 2007 and served two tours in Iraq as an Infantryman. As an Infantryman in the Reserves, I work in a training division to bring marksmanship and tactics training to non-combat units during major training exercises. After a bouncing around to college and civilian workforce a friend helped me get into the contracting world, and I have been training US military personnel for the l

ast three years on weapons and tactics. I have been certified through USCCA and Army Reserve Senior Gunner Course to teach fi****ms. Now, I want to bring that experience to you.

This is a great drill I like to include in Pistol Fundamentals Level 2. I typically wait for Level 2 to incorporate "strings" of shots. This gives shooters the ability to build upon Level 1 and begin to focus on the importance of grip, body position, and prepping the trigger for follow up shots. You can find a lot of "times" on the internet for how quickly you should shoot this drill. My recommendation is to practice without worrying about your time until you become comfortable with the drill. Don't accept sloppy practice at a new task because you read it on the internet.

The Bill drill is one of the most simple and common drills for checking key pistol shooting skills—even if it might look like you’re trying to do your best J...

I wanted to give a quick recap of last weekend’s Pistol Fundamentals Level 1 class. The focus of level 1 is on being able to make precise shots and obtain tight shot groups. To do this there are two key fundamentals: sight alignment and trigger control. Start by aligning the front sight perfectly centered in the rear sight notch, with both tops level, and maintain sharp focus on the front sight—not the target. Next, ensure smooth trigger control by pressing the trigger straight back and taking up any slack first. This prevents disrupting your sight picture. Taking the slack out of the trigger helps avoid jerking or slapping the trigger, as it can pull your shots off target. Mastering these basics will lead to tighter, more precise groups on target. Trying to work on too many of the basics at one time usually leads to mental overload so make sure you go to the range with a training plan and limit the concepts you’re trying to work on.

Here's a method for conducting immediate action on a failure to fire with your AR. While I don't teach this method, I like the demonstration he gives of popping a round off the magazine. I view that as a problem when loading, because you shouldn't be doing immediate action on an open bolt.

Failure to feed? No problem. Gunsite Academy instructor Bob Whaley demonstrates how to get your gun back in action quickly with the push, pull, roll and rac...

I'd added a few videos for handgun and wanted to add some rifle. I love the guys from Warrior Poets Society. This video is nice because it shows sort of what I like to teach in Defensive Rifle Level 1 and Level 2. The ready ups John does are a large part of Level 1 and the barricade work Paul does is all Level 2.

Ammo is scarce and getting to the range is getting more and more expensive. This video focuses on the most bang for your buck rifle drills. Paul kicks off th...
