Strength Training in its simplicity is the ability to lift more weight and/or a weight faster from session to session. As a coach I make sure all components line up to keep this happening while minimizing the risk of injury.

I have started a FB Group called 40+ Muscle + Science. I am sharing my experiences and what I've learned by being a coach more than 25 years. You don't have to be 40 or older to join. Most of what I write about applies to almost everyone at any age. Come aboard!

Working out is good for students... Researchers at the University of Austin found better grades correlated with working out. Here is what they concluded:
"The students who averaged an A (the highest grade in the American education system) trained more than students who averaged a B. Students who averaged a B trained more often than students who did not get further than a C, D or F."

"One straightforward solution to reducing injuries is not to specialize in a single sport. In a 2017 study involving 1,544 high-school-age athletes (half female), sports specialization was identified as an independent risk factor for injury.
One straightforward solution to reducing injuries is not to specialize in a single sport…but is that the only answer—the best way to reduce injuries in a sport is to stop playing it?"

The incidence of ACL and Achilles injuries, even “non-contact” injuries, is rising, as anyone who watches football, basketball, or soccer knows. But not in weightlifters, even when they have accidents involving massive amounts of weight. Why? Coach Kim Goss delves into the importance of elastic ...

Generally, the best athletes require exceptional power development. This means an athlete needs the ability to accelerate. This ability translates to running or sprinting, jumping, throwing, or moving another athlete out of the way. Skills are great to have but without power, an athlete is still a bench warmer.

'When I was a boxer in the 1970's, I was hit in the face by Joe Frazier, knocked out by Muhammad Ali, and knocked down a couple of times by Ron Lyle before I got up and won. All of the fights had one thing in common: When they were over, I could hardly remember the pain. I forgot my weak knees, the cuts, the blood in my eyes. If not for the films of my fights, I would have put them totally out of my mind. It's the same when you hit rough times: Don't let the pain and disappointment lodge inside.'

Fascinating that cancer tumors have their own microbiome...

A pair of newly published studies have reported novel links between fungal microorganisms and cancer. The research reports different types of tumors seem to harbor unique fungal populations, raising the possibility of new ways to diagnose and treat cancer.

Strength Training correlated to better grades...

The more times a week students work out with weights in the weight room, the better their grades are. This is the conclusion of researchers from the University of Texas at Austin in a study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.

Pycnogenol, my favorite supplement, has another big analysis that was published and concluded that it lowers blood pressure.

Pycnogenol lowers blood pressure. According to a Chinese meta-study, published in the Iranian Journal of Public Health in 2018, Pycnogenol supplementation lowers both diastole and systole blood pressure by more than 3 points.

It's nice to see another study backing up something I have told clients for years. A lack of sleep puts fat on... This study is good but to add, there are also hormones helping the fat to get to the belly area such as cortisol.

New research shows that lack of sufficient sleep combined with free access to food increases calorie consumption and consequently fat accumulation, especially unhealthy fat inside the belly.
