A common misconception among parents is that flotation devices teach children how to swim.
But the truth is that they only teach children how to float with assistance.
Puddle jumpers and life jackets should never replace actual water skills.
When children spend most of their time in flotation devices, they often learn habits that work with the device but not without it.
They become accustomed to staying upright in the water, relying on support to keep them afloat, and may develop a false sense of confidence about their abilities.
This can create a dangerous gap between what a child thinks they can do and what they can actually do if they unexpectedly enter the water without the device.
Life jackets are designed for safety in open water environments such as lakes, rivers, and boating activities. They are important safety tool, but they are not swimming teachers.
Real water safety comes from real skills:
✔️ Learning to float independently
✔️ Learning to roll onto the back to breathe
✔️ Learning to move through the water with purpose
✔️ Learning how to safely exit the pool
The goal is not to raise children who feel safe because they're wearing a flotation device. The goal is to raise children who know what to do when they aren't.
Water safety begins with skills, not equipment.
