Backs are branded — tops go down tomorrow.

Today’s run of Baltic birch came off the UV flatbed with the Downeast Co****le mark and QR code printed clean on the underside.

Tomorrow’s the fun one: the design side.
There’s something satisfying about watching a stack of blank panels pick up their identity. Each set ends up somewhere different — a backyard in Belgrade, a camp on Sebago, a tailgate in Bangor — but they all start right here on this bench.

Stay tuned for what’s going on the tops. Going to be a good day in the shop.

Cutting more Co****le Board parts on the CNC today... I need to run about 8 of these sheets today to fill orders for the week.

I made some changes to the design recently for recessed magnets that will hold the legs in place for storage and carrying.

After cutting, each part gets radiused where needed, and sanded on all edges before getting 2 coats of spar urethane for durability and some weather resistance.

Busy day in the shop with both printers going printing boards!

UV printing > vinyl wraps. Every time. Here’s why:
✅ No peeling or bubbling
✅ Photographic detail, edge to edge
✅ Smooth surface = consistent toss
✅ Fades slower, lasts longer
✅ Zero seams, zero lifting

The ink is cured into the surface — not sitting on top of it. That’s the difference between boards that look great for a season and boards that look great for years.

Slight cupping in the board led to the printer carriage hitting the board and scratching the ink. Most of the time I catch the issue before it happens, but sometimes they still happen

The remedy here was reprinting a fresh board. The customer always comes first and they should expect the best when working with me.

This isn’t your dad’s MDF. 🇺🇸

Standard MDF and moisture don’t mix — anyone who’s left a piece out in the rain knows what happens next. So when I started exploring materials for outdoor co****le boards, I wanted to understand what was actually available before committing to anything.

That’s when I came across Extira — an exterior-grade MDF that’s been used in the building trades for siding, trim, and signage for years. The key difference is how it’s manufactured: it uses a moisture-resistant resin binder and is treated specifically for outdoor exposure.
I bought two sheets and ran my own informal soak test on an unfinished piece. I expected significant swelling — that’s just what MDF does. What I found was pretty minimal movement, which told me the material science was real and not just marketing.

Here’s the first set finished — UV printed and top-coated with spar urethane. The surface came out beautifully and the boards have good weight and feel.

It’s not the right material for every situation, but if you’re after a paintable, printable surface that holds up better outdoors than standard sheet goods, Extira is worth knowing about.
