A Chicago-area sheriff believes his lengthy law enforcement career positions him best to address public safety and criminal justice issues in the race for the Republican nomination for governor.

Sheriff James Mendrick, of DuPage County in suburban Chicago, said crime and safety will be one of the most salient issues of the midterm elections.

“I think this is the year where safety is going to prevail,” Mendrick said. Find the full "Politically Speaking" episode in the comments. 👇

IDNR will host two additional public meetings in Illinois’ south waterfowl hunting zone in response to hunter feedback regarding the timing of the duck season split for 2026-2030.

All south zone and current south-central zone waterfowl hunters are encouraged to attend either of the following meetings to contribute to IDNR’s information-gathering process:

➡️ Wednesday, Nov. 12, 6-8 p.m., Southern Illinois University, Lawson Hall, Room 151, 1075 Lincoln Drive, Carbondale

➡️ Thursday, Nov. 13, 6-8 p.m., Carlyle High School cafeteria and commons area,
1461 12th St., Carlyle

Waterfowl zone boundaries have already been determined for the 2026-2030 seasons; thus, these meetings are to gather information on season timing, split length and split timing. Advance registration is not required.

New zone lines and season dates will not take effect until the 2026 season. A map of waterfowl zone lines for the 2026-2030 seasons can be found at https://bit.ly/ILzonelines.

Season dates and zone lines for the 2025-2026 hunting season are already set and can be found in IDNR’s current hunting and trapping digest or on the Hunt Illinois website.

Wow! Illinois youth hunters set a new record during the 2025 season, harvesting a preliminary total of 4,714 deer Oct. 11-13. The top harvest counties are:

➡ Randolph, 259
➡ Pike, 164
➡ Adams, 155
➡ Jefferson, 155
➡ Marion, 135
➡ Fayette, 122
➡ Effingham, 118
➡ Shelby, 100
➡ Jasper, 97
➡ Perry, 96

Youth hunters with an unfilled, valid youth deer permit may still hunt with the permit during the upcoming firearm deer seasons Nov. 21-23 and Dec. 4-7. This is the first year that unfilled youth permits are valid for both segments of firearm season.
