⚾ LITCHFIELD BASEBALL PLAYERS & PARENTS ⚾

Please read and help us share this with any current or prospective Litchfield or Mt. Olive baseball families who may have missed the Thrillshare message.

I know it’s the end of August, but I want to get everyone together early so we can start laying the foundation for the upcoming Litchfield baseball season.

For those I have not had the opportunity to meet yet, I’m Gregg Hires, the new Litchfield Varsity Baseball Coach. I’m excited about where we can take this program. One of my biggest goals is to build a program that gives both our JV and Varsity players meaningful opportunities to develop, compete, and enjoy playing baseball.

We will cover:

• The vision and expectations for our JV and Varsity programs
• Offseason plans and opportunities
• Spring schedule planning based on player interest
• The future and structure of our JV program
• Uniform updates
• Fan gear and program apparel

Our hope is to continue operating an independent JV team that plays approximately 12 to 15 full games this spring. The amount of interest we have will directly affect how we schedule and structure JV, so having prospective players at this meeting is important.

We are also currently planning to kick off our offseason on Sunday, October 4 with a mini fall-ball evaluation camp. This will give our coaching staff an opportunity to evaluate players and help us build an offseason development schedule.

One thing I want to make very clear: our offseason baseball program will be designed around our athletes’ other sports and extracurricular activities.

Nothing we do will prevent a player from participating in a fall or winter sport. In fact, I strongly encourage our players to be involved in other sports and activities.

Many of our travel baseball players already understand how this works. You can be fully committed to your current sport or activity while still finding a small window of time to prepare for baseball. We want multi-sport athletes and well-rounded students, and we will work with them.

If you know a Litchfield or Mt. Olive student who is interested in playing high school baseball, please invite them and their parents to attend the September 13 meeting. This is not limited to players who were on last year’s roster.

If you received the original message and no longer plan to participate in baseball, just let me know so we can keep our contact information and player numbers accurate.

I’m looking forward to meeting everyone, hearing from our players and parents, and getting to work building something we can all be proud of.

After a lot of thought and reflection, I have made the decision to resign as the Head Baseball Coach at Litchfield High School.

This program has meant a great deal to me, especially as a graduate of Litchfield in 2012, and I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over the past four years. Together, we were able to win the first regional title in 12 years, the second sectional title in school history, make three straight regional title appearances, win 20 games in three consecutive seasons for the first time in school history, and set the school record for single-season wins with 28.

More than the wins and records, I will always be proud of the players and people in this program. Watching these young men grow, compete, and represent Litchfield the right way will always be what I remember most. I also hope the Litchfield community has enjoyed everything we have been able to accomplish over the past four years, and looking into the crowd and seeing over 500 fans in 2024 at our super sectional game is a moment I will never forget.

I want to sincerely thank all of the players, assistant coaches, school administration, families, and the entire Litchfield community for their support and belief in what we were building together. I also want to extend a special thank you to the local businesses in town that helped support and fund our indoor batting cages—your generosity made a lasting impact on our program and our players.

While stepping away is not an easy decision, it is the right one for me and my family at this time. I will always be grateful for my time here and will continue to root for the success of Litchfield Baseball.

Beyond proud of my boys for the performance they put on yesterday in the regional championship vs a good Roxana team in front of our home crowd. We may have came up short yesterday in extra innings, but this group will never be forgotten.

70 wins in the last 3 years. Back-to-back-to-back 20 win season for the first time in school history, school record in wins for a season with 28, three straight regional title appearances, 1 regional title won, and a sectional title won. Not much more you can ask from a great group of boys. I have been blessed to coach these boys for the past 138 games. You guys will be missed and remembered for the rest of my life.
