Trout is back in action and going strong. Amazing that a month ago he had a stick lodged in his chest and now he shows no sign of injury. I know- a lot of bird hunting stories/posts the last few months… I joined a private (not fancy!) club this year that allows me run the boys whenever I want… love watching them work, love my old shotguns that have great sentimental value and love hosting my brothers at my special place… just gets me through the winter. With that said, I can’t wait to fish!

It’s February already and I might be getting a little anxious… April will be here before we know it! I’m thinking our first trips will be on the Bay- it’s been on fire in April the last several years. Throw in some early dry fly action on the river and we got ourselves a damn good early spring. Give me a shout and we’ll plan our next adventure!

This morning I posted a picture of Trout bandaged and coned-up. The number of comments/messages asking about him was overwhelming… thank you!

No, he did not take some birdshot… he was running hard for a downed bird when he jumped over a log. When he came down, he yelped and rolled, but he got back up and made the retrieve. 10 minutes later, Trout was on point and I noticed blood dripping from his chest from an open wound the size of a half dollar.

I immediately took him to the local animal hospital, thinking he’d need some stitches and a few days off. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), an x-ray showed several pieces of wood deep in his chest (one of them over 4” long). He spent a long time in surgery as they kept finding more fragments. Crazy how he kept hunting after being impaled!

He’s in ICU for the night so they can monitor his breathing because the major concern is that a lung is punctured. Doctor is optimistic.

So, that’s my day in a nutshell. Trout is a ridiculous good bird dog and I love watching him work, but more importantly, he’s the sweetest, most affectionate dog I’ve ever seen. From the amount of messages I’ve received, I’d say he made an impact on you as well.

2023 was a hell of a year on the water… from The NJ Shore to The Delaware (back and forth a bunch) to Montauk and back to NJ there were fish caught, a lot of laughs and even more memories made.
Thank you all for fishing with me year after year- I couldn’t be more appreciative!

21 year of good times with … we got married during fishing season, so I’ve never been home to celebrate an anniversary. Luckily, she loves the Montauk hang as much as do… dive bar dinner, extended happy hour and a little dock light fishing in the rain. Nice life we’re putting together- love ya!

My dad’s old Defender (his pride and joy besides my mom, me and possibly my brother and sister) has found a new home. Bittersweet- I love driving it around town, but would much rather be in passenger seat with him on the wheel. I had to make a little change to make it mine- I think he’d approve. The Walter boys have been feeding big fish feathers with me for the past 10 years and they’re damn good at it. .retlaw even has two 50s under his belt, but today was Joe’s day.
Although big fish have been around, the fishing wasn’t crazy good and there was nothing on top which is really difficult for a fly guy. Joe and Jesse just didn’t stop casting… like every cast was their last.
Joe was finally rewarded with a fish of a lifetime. What a freaking pleasure!

11 hours on water, 80 miles driven, hundreds of casts… totally relentless!
