On Pedro’s Birthday Dolina took a quick ba****ck ride…
Wait till the end of this video ….Pedro always nickers when he hears the “click” sound knowing he’s done something right and he also knows he’ll now get the reinforcer (treat) !! Cutest old man 💙 I also love Bea Buckleys laugh ….

What Rt training looks like ….reward curiosity
This helps lower your horse’s cortisol levels / and your horse will be more apt to be more curious than scared of new things like the random huge pile of water cooler tubs hanging out in the aisle !
Yesterday was the fist time Jackie saw these and we spent a few minutes checking these out lots of clicks and rewards - conditioning the idea that the tubs are of no harm and reinforcing curiosity - today she had no concerns exiting her stall or passing the tubs and non chelantly targeted them on our way out to the pasture - progress !

Positive reinforcement training works well and is FUN - learn more on my website / clinics available, drive in lessons or hire me to come to you !! Let me show you what a wonderful training tool Rt is - we work on your horse’s behavior and build trust.

That’s me on the beautiful chestnut waaaay back when I was a riding instructor (probably age 17 here) in the Adirondacks at Pok-O-MacCready camp ! Because we were in the mountains in the land of the Iroquoi Nation the camp set aside a few days called “Indian Days” and the campers were split into 5 tribes - I’m in black honoring the Onondaga tribe. The games started and ended with a council fire and it was tradition for the riding staff (5 of us) to sit in silence as the campers proceeded quietly to the council fire then once the drumming stopped we would turn our horses and gallop by the campfire entrance and down through the long path in the woods all the way back to the barn - ba****ck, in our bare feet - I loved the feeling of my toes holding onto the soft belly of my horse / no helmets (Eek) but it was something I loved and looked forward to each of the 5 summers I was at Pok-O-MacCready - such such FUN days ☺️

A dear friend of mine, Lucy, recently sent me this pic - it brings back great memories - she’s taking the photo so we don’t get to see her …..thanks Lucy for that photo - Lucy works with horses in England !!

We celebrated Wet Paints 30th Birthday last weekend / my heart was filled with joy as the Hunts End Farm crew from the good ole days joined the party - Pedro’s minis we’re there too - I had the reverse round pen available for guests to play with the horses ❤️ we ate Marti’s famous carrot cake and other goodies too

What a special pony Mr Pedro is…we first met when I was head of the summer camp program at Hidden Valley Camp in Montville 27 years ago / we were at Hemphills selecting the summers herd and the moment I sat on him I had a feeling of knowing and comfort - like my mother was there connecting us …..although I noticed that the wranglers struggled to put his bridle on, I still wanted to take this little guy (he was 3 and barely broke) back to camp. It was my job to get him comfortable with bridling and a month into camp we started incorporating the children - mind you this was before I started clicker training the horses (which would have been much more efficient - he would have accepted and felt comfortable with bridling if positive reinforcement was used !!)

At the end of camp that summer I just felt he needed to come home with me - I already had Lucky - the gentlest Quarter Horse whom was a superstar in college - Lucky Loo was a wonderful hunter jumper, sure footed and patient. Pedro and Lucky met at Hunts End Farm, they weren’t best buddies but tolerated each other…a few years at HEF I decided to take Wet Paint to Hunter Hill Farm where I was teaching and we spent a few years learning Dressage together there. In 2005 my boys were reunited at their forever home : MRF. Both boys became lesson horse and pony along with Apple Field and (eventuality) Radu as part of my program team. Pedro became a wonderful Dressage pony and took Bea Buckley to her first show (when she was 15.). Along with lessons we spent many fun Horses & Art Camps during the summer months teaching kids to ride (the past 18 years) ….Pedros last student, Morgan, enjoyed him emensly 😊 Pedro is now retired from riding but is available and super fun to work with at Liberty, he will do some Birthday Party walk arounds too / he nickers when he hears that “click” and has a good sense of humor still / I just love the old boy !!

To all the students that rode Pedro over the years and have loved him- thank you !!

Another great year for Pedro 💙
