General Studio Information

Our Purpose:
The Phoenix Rising Studio is a Dance Studio & Event Space. It is a safe space, that is open and welcoming to all. The Studio’s primary function is the Tribal Belly Dance classes of Jewel in the Lotus Dance Company. The Dance Instructors are also currently working on adding monthly specialty classes to the Studio’s available programs (more details will be posted here & on the events board when these learning opportunities become available). Our History:
The Phoenix Rising Studio was opened to be the home of Jewel in the Lotus Dance Company. The Studio was born from the ashes of quite the nomadic lifestyle; for Jewel in the Lotus called many places home before Phoenix Rising was founded. The group originated as a “Sister Troupe” to Benu Dance Company & called the Dancer’s Oasis Studio their home in their humble beginnings. When Benu sadly disbanded, the Sister Troupe carried on as they could, in one of their Founder’s homes. But even in their modest “Basement Days” the Troupe flourished; brought in new members, began performing at & even hosting shows, and learning new techniques. The time came to move on from this location & the Troupe shared space in Downtown Lincoln with several local Metal Bands. They spent roughly a year in this space of eclectic mixtures of artistic talents & gained many friendships in the local art community during their time there. But as space was limited & the Troupe was ever-growing, the time came to spread their wings & find a new home. The current location was originally shared with several other groups once again; a recording studio, a non-profit organization, & a Middle-Eastern Band. Each group ended up going different ways throughout the next two years; until only Jewel in the Lotus remained. It was in this moment that the Phoenix Rising Studio was officially born! Finally having a legitimate business space all to themselves, that met the variety of needs the Troupe required; they found peace in having no foreseeable need to move again anytime soon. Therefore, they knew they could settle in; & their home deserved a name befitting to their journey to achieving this harmonious habitat. Our Inspiration:
The Phoenix or 'fire bird' is a mythical bird and is a symbol of the sun. The Phoenix is also a legendary symbol of transformation; of life, death, and re-birth. In ancient Egypt, the Phoenix was a symbol of the sun rising and setting. Like a Phoenix, the sun sets (resembling a ball of fire) and rises again as a new sun. The Phoenix is also known as a symbol of royalty. The mythical Phoenix animal totem is the keeper of the fire in all of creation. As a powerful spiritual totem, the Phoenix is the ultimate symbol of strength and renewal. As both a fire and solar symbol, the Phoenix animal guide is symbolic of the sun, which “dies” in setting each night; only to be reborn in rising the next morning. In this sense, it never truly dies; rather, it is an immortal creature continually rising from the ashes.
The popular myths of the Phoenix, or its counterpart, existed in many cultures. In each culture the birds are all identified with, or connected to, the sun. We took inspiration from the Phoenix in two regards. First, being rebirth; not only being born from the ashes of our “Sister Troupe”, but in our continued rebirth in locations, members, and stylizations. Second, being the sun; in how dance has shined a light on our lives, and how we hope to share that light with others through our performances, and teaching future generations this ancient, ever-evolving art form.

Here are the few updates I can provide on the moving situation...

1. The "perfect" house was a scam 🤬😭

2. The construction project apparently had an open house last night which included the next round of scheduling updates.
- It said the info discussed will be shared on the project website, so I will be scouring that for updates since I was unable to attend.

3. I will be contacting a Realtor to try to get additional assistance on possible properties while I wait to find out what exactly is happening regarding the city supposedly helping relocate affected tenants.

4. With donations so far & personal funds I've been able to set aside, I've got basically enough for first month's rent per my anticipated budget.
So now I'm continuing to work towards saving up for deposit and general moving costs.
But I'm getting there dang it!

Thank you all for your support, whether by conversation, fundraiser sharing, or donations. It really means a lot to me. 💞

As a reminder, if you want to donate via other means (to avoid the GoFundMe fees), here are my other modes of virtual payment:

This was really helpful to read, especially since I've been feeling guilty about not keeping up with my Drill Videos like I promised myself I would.

In truth, I just have a hard time wanting to get behind the camera to do it.

I've never been good at keeping up a social media presence for my dance projects, so that was a loftier goal than I thought it was.

Anywho, take a step back if you need.

For me, it was last weekend's workshop that made me feel like it rekindled my love for dance.
The desire to practice and do more in a variety of ways was sparked & I can't tell you how good that feeling is.

May you find happiness in your dance, to whatever level that may be. 💖💃🏻💖

A lot of dancers seem to be frazzled right now. Between the restaurants asking them to do what they want vs providing their own artistry and show, the constant expectations to look a certain way, changing market demand, the lack of paying gigs (or ones that want to pay market), dancer run events with 5 minute limits where we are all performing for each other, and teachers burning out trying to build something larger than a single beginner class in a world of instant gratification and rising costs, it can feel so daunting, right?

This is me giving you permission to take back your dance. For you. Sometimes you need someone else to say it.

Not everything has to be commercialized.

If you knew how many "successful" dancers are subsidized, you'd realize a lot of what we've been fed on social media isn't a realistic expectation. Meanwhile the most loved grew naturally from their passion organically; they let their love of dance shine first and that's what made them successful.

You can enjoy just loving dance.

Being a student.

Being a community member.

Not having to market yourself 24/7

It's ok to not post every video or perform in every opportunity.

It's ok to not be "on" all the time

Every artist needs breaks. Burnout is real.

Go back to your roots. Why do you love to dance?

Find that spark and nuture it. Let it grow again.

Or set it down until you miss it.

The definition of success has changed for me over the years too. Today it is the fact that I get to dance when I want to, when I feel like it, and when the music tells me to. Not when I have to in order to meet some expectation to show up for others. Now I show up for me. What a freaking gift!
