After getting permission from Ohshima Sensei in 1994, then sandan (3rd-degree black belt) now godan (5th-degree black belt) David Altman, started the UNL Shotokan dojo at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. David Altman started karate practice under godan (5th-degree black belt) Jon Beltram in February 1976 in Kansas City, Missouri. He has since completed many special trainings, leading several in

the Midwest, and is serving as an elected member of the board of SKA. The dojo started with about 10 students and new students come every semester to learn the art of karate-do. The UNL dojo has and continues to host exchange practices and visits from other seniors. The first exchange practice was led in early 1995 by godan John Teramoto. Another recent visting senior came in March 2010, SKA President Ron Thom. The UNL dojo along with several other SKA Midwest karateka from Kansas City, Indianapolis, and Chicago presented a Shotokan Karate exhibition during the Japan Festival on March 5, 2009. Members also attended the 10-year anniversary of the opening of the Shotokan Ohshima Dojo in Santa Barbara, CA and Nesei Week Karate Exhibition & Tournament. Dojo black belts regularly attend the annual Black Belt Council Convention to keep close ties with fellow SKA karateka across the country. The UNL dojo has maintained strong ties with the Kansas City dojo, where its members attend special trainings and other events. David Altman continues to emphaisize our Budo roots and those senior members who have really laid the foundation for our practice.

As we end the year with another 1000 punches, we wish everyone another great 2024 New Year. We also thank the friendship that we made, new additions to our lives, and saying goodbyes to our dearly departed. May we see each other again!

Tonight, we honor our ancestors who had to practice in secret late into the night. Four thousand oizuki (lunge front punches) in total were done on the eve of the coming New Year. Punching out the last karate practice to start fresh the next year. Happy New Year to all. It was a tough and wonderful year. Let’s fight on to the next! Kiai!!

Hi friends,

Sorry for the short notice on this. Since the university did not have space for us to practice tonight, Anna has volunteered to lead a yoga session at her home. We'll be starting a little later around 7pm. If you're interested in joining, please contact us at our dojo email [email protected] or via text / phone call to our Google Voice at 402-937-0505 and I'll be happy to pick people up for carpooling.

We'll be back to our regular schedule of practices next week: Tuesdays 5:45pm-7:45pm and Fridays 6-7pm. We don't have another interruption in our regular schedule until UNL's Fall Break in mid-October, just after our trip to Memphis for the 8th Annual Memphis Jiyu Kumite Clinic & Tournament the weekend of Oct 6 and our collaborative event with the Kawasaki Reading Room for Japanese Physical Education Day on Oct 10.

Hope you all have a fun and safe Labor Day weekend!

Take care,
Greg

We had a great time meeting new and returning students at Party at the Union, the Fall Club Fair on City Campus, and East Campus Welcome Back. The buzz and excitement of everyone on the campuses was palpable. We hope to see many new karateka bring that energy to the dojo.

Check our calendar (http://unl.ska.org/karate-class-schedule/) for upcoming events. We're having a dojo social this Friday. Come to practice on Tuesday to learn more.

We'll be traveling to Memphis the weekend of October 6th for the 8th Annual Memphis Jiyu Kumite Clinic & Tournament. The barbeque dinner and social afterwards is always a highlight and brings karateka from many nearby states.

On October 10, we'll be collaborating with the Kawasaki Reading Room for Japanese Physical Education Day.

November 10 we'll drive to Kansas City for fall kyu test. Delicious Thai food at Lulu's will likely follow too.

Looking forward to an exciting fall semester!

Hi all. Here is a little info on upcoming dojo events.

Our dojo will travel to Kansas City on Saturday, November 18th for kyu test. Make sure you are practicing your kata every day. We'll talk after practice about travel plans.

Looking further ahead, Midwest Winter Special Training is currently scheduled for January 12 – 14th in Indianapolis. Block off the dates in your calendar and set your intention to go. As in the past, and into the distant future, Special Training is our most cherished practice. It is the best time and place for us to grow as karateka and human beings, with lots of support from our SKA friends. Find a way to make it.
