It takes a team.

Preparing for a new baby isn't something you have to do alone.

1️⃣ Your OB or midwife helps care for your pregnancy and birth.
2️⃣ Your pediatrician cares for your baby's health.
3️⃣ Your doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after birth.
4️⃣ Your IBCLC helps you navigate feeding, from prenatal planning to pumping, latch challenges, milk supply, and beyond.

Each member of your care team brings different expertise, and together, they can help you feel more informed, supported, and confident.

Research suggests doula support is associated with positive birth experiences and improved breastfeeding initiation, highlighting the value of having support throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

We're grateful to work alongside wonderful local doulas—including our friends at Birth Plus—to support families in the Lincoln community. 💜

When your baby arrives early, feeding often looks different. 🤍

Parents of premature babies rarely have the feeding journey they imagined.

You may be pumping instead of nursing. Learning to navigate the NICU. Balancing tube feeds, bottles, and breastfeeding. It can feel overwhelming.

Research continues to show that human milk offers important benefits for many premature infants, including support for their developing immune system and a lower risk of certain serious complications of prematurity.

But providing milk for a preterm baby can also come with unique challenges, and that's where support matters.

An IBCLC can help you with:

👉 Establishing and protecting your milk supply
👉 Pumping strategies while your baby is in the NICU
👉 Transitioning from pumping or tube feeds to breastfeeding, when appropriate
👉 Creating a feeding plan that works for you and your baby's medical needs

Every preterm feeding journey is different, and every drop of human milk is valuable.

Whether you're exclusively pumping, breastfeeding, supplementing, or doing a combination, you deserve compassionate, evidence-based support.

We're here to help, every step of the way. 💜

Pumping at work shouldn’t feel like an afterthought. 💼🍼

This week is Workplace Lactation Week and it’s a good reminder that returning to work doesn’t have to mean giving up your feeding goals, but it usually does take a little planning.

A few things that can make pumping at work easier:

⭐ Know where and when you’ll be able to pump before your first day back
⭐ Build a pumping schedule around your baby’s usual feeding rhythm
⭐ Make sure your pump setup is comfortable and efficient
⭐ Keep backup parts, milk storage supplies, and a charger at work
⭐ Give yourself time to adjust. Your routine may need tweaking once you’re actually back

And if pumping at work feels harder than expected, that doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.

An IBCLC can help you troubleshoot output, fl**ge fit, pumping frequency, and a plan that fits your actual workday.

👉 Need help planning your return to work? We offer in-home and telehealth IBCLC support in Lincoln and surrounding areas.

Who’s giving you feeding advice, AND are they also selling you something? 🤔🤑

Parents are surrounded by infant-feeding information from social media, influencers, celebrities, brands, family, friends, and professionals.

Some of it is helpful.

Some of it is marketing.

Before taking advice to heart, ask:

• Is this sponsored or tied to a product?
• Are the claims evidence-based?
• Does the message respect different feeding choices?
• Is the person qualified to give this kind of guidance?

Good support should help you feel informed, not pressured, guilty, or afraid.

At Lincoln Lactation, we provide compassionate, evidence-based guidance that centers your baby, your goals, and your family’s real-life needs.

🌙☀️ Does breast milk change from day to night?

Research suggests...yes!

A recent study found that certain components of breast milk naturally fluctuate throughout the day.

For example:

☀️ Cortisol was highest in the morning.
🌙 Melatonin was highest at night.

These natural changes may help support a baby's developing circadian rhythm (their internal body clock).

Researchers also observed small differences in some immune factors and the milk microbiome over a 24-hour period.

So should you worry about matching every bottle to the exact time it was pumped? No. 🙅‍♀️

While these findings are fascinating, they don't change the fact that babies benefit from human milk whenever they're able to receive it.

💜 Whether you're nursing, pumping, or doing a combination of both, we're here to help you find what works best for your family.

Paying more out of pocket doesn’t always mean receiving a higher level of lactation care.

Different lactation credentials represent different levels of education, clinical experience, and scope of practice.

For general encouragement and education, several types of support may be helpful. But concerns such as ongoing pain, poor milk transfer, slow weight gain, supply challenges, or complicated feeding situations may require the clinical training of an IBCLC.

Here’s the part many families don’t realize: IBCLC care may be covered by your health insurance, while another service with less clinical training may require you to pay fully out of pocket.

Before hiring someone, ask:

• What credential(s) do you hold?
• Is this concern within your scope?
• Will you refer me to another provider or service if I need a higher level of care?
• Can this visit be billed through my insurance?

At Lincoln Lactation, Melissa and Anna are IBCLCs. We accept many insurance plans and offer in-home and telehealth support.

✨ Check your coverage before paying out of pocket for care that may already be included in your benefits. ✨

When you’re just beginning, it can be hard to picture where your breastfeeding journey will lead, especially with your first baby.

Will feeding feel comfortable?

Will you need to pump?

How often will baby eat?

What will returning to work look like?

While you don’t have to have every answer before baby arrives, a prenatal visit with an IBCLC can help you understand what’s typical, talk through your goals, and create a flexible plan for the early days.

That way, your expectations are based on your family’s needs.

Not pressure, comparison, or guesswork.

Every feeding journey is different, and plans can change. We’re here to help you feel informed, prepared, and supported along the way. 🤍

Pumping more often beats pumping longer for more than one reason.

First, when milk supply needs extra support, adding a few shorter “micro pumping” sessions signal to your body that it needs to make more milk. 🍼

Plus, they may be easier to fit into your busy schedule than waiting for one long session later.

That may look like:

⭐ Ensuring you exercise your rights to pump during the workday
⭐ Adding a brief session when your schedule allows with an in-bra pump
⭐ Occasionally pumping overnight, even if baby is sleeping longer 💤

Research suggests that milk supply is influenced largely by how frequently milk is removed, especially when you’re regularly separated from your baby.

A personalized pumping plan should support your supply, your sleep, workday, and wellbeing.

Feed the baby, not the freezer. 🤍

A freezer stash can be helpful, but it does not need to be the goal.

Your baby needs milk now. You do not need dozens of ounces stored away to prove that feeding is going well.

Build a stash only when it serves your family; not because social media made it feel required.

Every family’s needs are different. We can help you make a plan that fits yours.

Breast shaping isn’t automatically necessary, but sometimes it can be helpful.

There’s been a welcome shift toward a more hands-off approach to feeding support in general and we agree that parents and babies shouldn’t be over-corrected when feeding is already working well. 🙅‍♀️

That’s why at Lincoln Lactation, we always start by observing. 👀

We look at:

🤱 How baby is latching
🤱 Whether feeding is comfortable
🤱 How milk transfer appears
🤱 What you’re already doing that works

If there isn’t a problem, we don’t need to create one.

But when a family comes to us because feeding is painful, ineffective, or challenging, hands-on techniques may sometimes help, including breast shaping or positioning support.

The goal isn’t to make feeding more complicated. It’s to offer the right amount of support for your specific situation, then help you feel confident doing it on your own. 💜
