TIMELESS OKINAWA|The Guardians of Okinawa

Across Okinawa, you’ll find pairs of lion-dog statues perched on rooftops, gates, and street corners. Known as shisa, they are more than decorative figures—they are guardians of the islands.

With origins tracing back to the Ryukyu Kingdom, shisa embody both strength and protection. Traditionally, one statue stands with its mouth open, warding off evil spirits, while the other keeps its mouth closed, holding good fortune within. Over the centuries, they have watched over families, villages, and entire communities, becoming one of Okinawa’s most enduring symbols.

For travelers, shisa may first appear as souvenirs or photo spots, yet their presence carries a story of faith, resilience, and identity. To see them is to glimpse Okinawa’s living spirit—quietly protecting, silently enduring, timelessly present.

What a sight to see!!!

Happy Obon, Okinawa! 🏮

This year, the Obon festival takes place from September 4th to September 6th. It’s a special time when families welcome the spirits of their ancestors back home for a few days of reunion and celebration.

If you’re out and about, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Traffic: Expect roads to be very congested, especially around cemeteries and on major highways. Many people are traveling to visit family, so please plan your commute accordingly.

Business Hours: While it's not a national holiday, many local shops and businesses will be closed or have reduced hours, especially on the final day, Ukui (September 6th).

Eisa: Keep an eye out for local Eisa performances! This dynamic folk dance is a beautiful and important part of the Obon celebration in Okinawa.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Obon!

Congratulations Russ, Lisa, and Izzy! Good job tonight 👍🏻
