The past 3 days still haven’t fully sunk in yet.
Our most recent hunt featured Damon, with Brandon guiding this unforgettable adventure at Sisco D Ranch. The hunt kicked off Monday afternoon with a quick overview of what to expect over the next few days. The plan was simple — ease into the hunt with an evening sit, do some scouting, and if the opportunity presented itself, make it count.
Before heading out, Brandon took Damon to the range for a quick rifle zero session. Damon’s 7mm PRC was absolutely driving tacks, and confidence was high as we made our way to the blind around 4 PM.
Most of the afternoon passed with little activity, but around 7 PM the ranch began to come alive. Species after species started appearing as the sun slowly dipped below the horizon. A herd of axis deer eventually made their way toward the blind, slowly working in to around 400 yards before stalling out. Then, out of our blind spot, another smaller group suddenly appeared at just 110 yards.
Almost immediately, Damon locked onto a beautiful Gold Class Axis buck, and the decision was made.
We watched and waited until the buck finally turned broadside… and Damon laid the hammer down. Buck down.
As the adrenaline settled, we checked the time — 8:30 PM. That’s when the Aoudad made their mistake. Instead of fleeing, they continued moving toward a nearby feeder. One look between us and the decision was already made… we were doubling down.
As one ram separated from the group, Damon settled in and made another perfect shot, dropping yet another Gold Class trophy.
Walking out of that blind felt like two kids running toward an ice cream truck. We couldn’t wait to get our hands on those animals and soak in what had just happened. After the post-harvest work was finished, we spent the rest of the evening sitting around replaying every moment and trying to absorb the experience.
The following morning started slow. We slept in a bit before Damon made a quick run to town while breakfast was prepared — Aoudad chorizo and eggs. After breakfast, we headed back to the range to send a few more rounds downrange before deciding to take a walk around the property.
I told Damon to grab his shotgun… just in case we ran into some turkeys.
Now, I’ll admit — neither of us were remotely dressed for a turkey hunt.
About five minutes into the walk, we spotted a turkey slipping into some deeper brush. We hustled in behind it and Damon hit a turkey call a few times. Almost instantly, several Toms hammered back. We dove into the brush and hid the best we could.
A few more calls later, and suddenly we had six Toms working their way in like bees to honey. We were completely surrounded.
I pointed out a group that had snuck in behind us, Damon picked one bird out, and BOOM — just like the night before, we were celebrating another harvest.
Only after the excitement settled did Damon casually mention he had never turkey hunted before.
To say I was astonished would be an understatement.
Not only did Damon call in his very first Tom, but he successfully harvested his first turkey ever.
Congratulations, Damon. What an incredible hunt and an even better experience to share with you. Welcome to the Sisco D Ranch family.
We can’t wait for the next trip and to see what kind of trouble we can get ourselves into next.
