How about a quick “buying + selling horses on the internet” q+a, based on some of the sh*t I’ve seen on Facebook in the last few days (hence the photos, featuring SSH alumni Wally, who I still miss having in the barn.)
Q: If you are selling a horse, is it ok to re-use the photos in the ad posted by the previous seller?
A: No. Take your own photos. Especially if you don’t have permission from the rider featured in the previous photos.
Q: is it ok to contact a seller who advertised a horse in the comments of another person’s ISO post?
A: IMHO (short for, in my humble opinion, if you don’t have teenagers who keep you hip to the abbreviations), absolutely.
Evidently this is controversial.
Hear me out.
The person posting the ISO post knows it is a public post.
That’s the point.
So for the ISO poster to expect that all comments will be treated as a private conversation is … silly.
Recently someone who had advertised a horse in the comments of an ISO post wrote that she was offended when someone sent her a private message about the horse she had available.
I thought that was super silly.
Because,
a) are you trying to sell the horse or not? if not why are you writing about him on the internet and
b) if you don’t want to respond to their message, then, don’t.
The person who messaged you wasn’t being unethical (as this person indicated), they were just interested in a horse they read about on the ***very public*** internet.
Q: If I try a horse that I found on Facebook and the horse was misrepresented, should I publicly call out/criticize the seller?
A: No. Let it go. If you feel the need or ethical obligation to stay involved, privately tell the seller (or admin of the group where you saw the ad) your concerns.
Or privately message people who comment on that horse’s ad and share your experience.
But public shaming never improves any situation, equestrian or otherwise.
(And it can make you look petty and spiteful.)
And a bonus:
Q: if I am not in the market for a horse, is there any reason for me to comment on a horse’s Facebook ad?
A: No! Never! Do the emotionally mature thing and screenshot the post, then text it to your horsey bestie with all of your snarky comments to get them out of your system.
😈
Let me know if you want more q&a posts! They are fun to research 😜
