✨Teacher Spotlight!✨ Our Ballet Mistress, Meagan Herald, is probably the coolest teacher ever! 😎 She began her dance career as a child in Colorado at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities. As a young dancer she rose to the rank of soloist performing in ballets such as Peter & the Wolf, Coppelia, Paquita, Pas de Quatre, and Hansel & Gretel. During this time Meagan began to focus on teaching ballet and started apprentice teaching under the watchful eye of Eve Paris. She was quickly elevated to teaching her own classes. Over her summers, she chose to train with James Clouser focusing on refining her training and which eventually led to a passion for working with beginning pointe students and nurturing an interest in injury prevention. 🩰
She says the best part about teaching is “the time I get to spend, year after year, watching young dancers grow into incredible young adults or watching adults explore dance for the first time or return to it after a long hiatus. I like that we are a small school and even if I am not a particular student's ballet teacher this year, I still get to talk with them in the waiting area and watch them dance in the May recital.” 💗
In addition to ballet, Meagan enjoys mathematics. 🧮 She earned her doctorate from the University of Utah and is a professor in the department of Applied Mathematics at VMI. She has even been known to emphasize the importance of mathematics to her ballet students who have to learn to work within the realm of physics to create the illusion of defying gravity. 🪽 In her spare time, she likes to play games or do escape rooms, do puzzles, or build Legos. She also likes to take relaxing walks with her husband and read books with a cat or two sitting on her lap. 🐱🐱
