This Memorial Day, join the powerful tradition of completing “Murph” — a Hero workout that turns sweat into remembrance. 🇺🇸💪
Murph honors Navy Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, a fearless SEAL from Patchogue, New York, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005, during Operation Red Wings. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary bravery. This workout was one of Mike’s favorites — he even called it “Body Armor.” CrossFit introduced it as an official Hero WOD in 2005, and the Memorial Day tradition grew organically in gyms worldwide as a way for athletes, military members, first responders, and everyday people to honor fallen heroes through grit and effort.
The Murph Workout (for time):
• 1-mile run
• 100 pull-ups
• 200 push-ups
• 300 air squats
• 1-mile run
Pro tip: Wear a 20 lb weighted vest (or body armor) if you have one — it’s optional but adds that extra challenge in Mike’s spirit. Many scale or partition the middle section (think rounds of 5 pull-ups / 10 push-ups / 15 squats, like the classic “Cindy” WOD) so anyone can participate, no matter your fitness level.
Murph is more than a workout — it’s a shared act of respect, resilience, and unity. Thousands around the globe tackle it every Memorial Day to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we can live free.
While we won’t have an organized effort this year, we encourage you to take an hour out of your holiday and get it done. Whether you’re crushing it solo or with your gym crew, you’re part of something bigger. Let’s honor the fallen — one rep, one mile, one memory at a time. Don’t forget to post your pics and tag us!
