Always improving. The Combat Shooting Team left the indoor range and headed to the mountains for some rifle training. The mountain winds were a challenge as the shooter learned the external ballistics to make center shots. Marksmen Up! Rah-VA-Mil!

The VMI Combat Shooting Team traveled to Fort Barfoot, VA to compete in the 2023 ROTC College Clash Shoot Out.

The competition consisted of 54 shooters and 11 other schools. The team had the opportunity to shoot against competitors from Virginia Tech, James Madison University, George Mason University, Liberty University, University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Richmond, Hampton-Sydney College, Longwood University, and others.

The competition was a combat EIC match for pistol. This means the shooters used an M17 from 25 meters on a silhouette target. The course of fire consisted of slow fire (10 rounds, 5 minutes), timed fire (5 rounds, 20 seconds, shot twice), and rapid fire (5 rounds, 20 seconds, shot twice). The targets were then graded out of 150 points. The competitors shot the course of fire in an individual competition and then in partner teams.

We would like to give a huge thank you to the Virginia Army National Guard's Marksmanship Training Unit and the 183rd RTI for hosting the event and inviting the team to represent the Virginia Military Institute.

Of the six shooters the following awards were presented:

1st Place Individual, Cadet Alex Bodner ‘26

2nd Place Individual, Cadet Kenneth Dinkel ‘25

2nd Place Partner Team, Cadets Kenneth Dinkel ‘25 and Alex Bodner ‘26

3rd Place Partner Team, Cadets Garret Kelenske ‘24 and Carter Hugate ‘24
