Buffalo Valley Rail Trail

Buffalo Valley Rail Trail Rail Trail spanning 9.3 miles from Lewisburg, PA to Mifflinburg, PA

The Buffalo Valley Rail Trail is the result of investment by the Union County Trail Authority, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Federal Highway Department. The trail revolutionizes non-motorized transportation and broadens the recreational options immensely in Union County. As the first developed off-road trail in the area, the trail provides an amenity entirel

y absent until now and becomes a crucial component of the transportation network. Whereas before only the bold could venture on foot or by bike beyond the core residential streets of the central municipalities, there is now a protected, well-designed infrastructure spine available to serve all ages and abilities, whether for recreation or transportation. Paralleling Rt 45, the primary east-west vehicular spine in Union County, the trail has provided our community with another option.

Good afternoon Trail Users!

Quick update:

We are awaiting final inspection on the trail surface and for a few small items to be taken care of by our contractor. As soon as the trail is open, you will certainly see an announcement here and on our webpage. Thank you again for your patience!

ATTENTION! Please stay OFF the tennis courts at the Lewisburg Area Recreation Park! We are almost finished with our project and need the community's cooperation to complete the improvements!

Good morning trail users!
When it comes to our current closure are often asked "What did this project do to the trail?" So we thought we'd take the time to lay out some detials:

1. Resurfacing - The main point of this project was to replace the surface of the trail between Bull Run Crossing and Meadow Green Drive. We didn't pave it, we replaced the "gravel" portion of the trail with new "gravel".

2. Why do you say "gravel"? - The surface (both new and old) isn't really just gravel or stone. It is a Penn State University developed material called Trail Surface Aggregate or TSA. TSA is a specific mixture of stone and binding material developed for use on non-motorized trails. When applied properly and allowed to cure it becomes almost pavement-hard and will last for many years.

3. Why did you do this project? - The BVRT, mainly built in 2011, has seen 15 years of sustained use. Much like any infrastructure, it needs maintained. In 2018 or 19, representatives from Penn State's Dirt and Gravel Road Program (developer of TSA, see above) took a look at and were impressed by the condition of the trail surface. But, then 2020 came along and the COVID pandemic drove many more people outdoors for activities and use of the BVRT more than DOUBLED. By 2023 (if not sooner) the Trail Authority recognized it was time for a new surface and began the process of initiating this needed capital improvement project.

4. What else was done? - The trail also has new, replacement cross-pipes in 8 different locations and you'll notice that a significant amount of split rail fencing has been removed. These improvements will allow better movement of stormwater and reduce the maintenance needs of the trail. There is ongoing vegetation management happening as well.

5. What's next? - As soon as the new trail surface passes inspection, the trail will be reopened. The Trail Authority is waiting for sign off from our engineer.

We hope this answers some questions, and, of course, if you have more, drop us a line and we'll do our best to answer them!

Trail users!

WE. ARE. SO. CLOSE.....

But we're not quite done yet. The new surface has to cure for a few days and our contractor has a few minor things to do on the trail yet and we need to do our final checks and whatnot. We're asking for your patience for just a bit longer and that you do not use the trail just yet. We don't want damage from people being on the trail too early now to muck up the surface for years to come.

Thank you!

Good afternoon trail users!

Here is your update for today:
Resurfacing is moving along quite well and should be up to Fairfield Road by the end of today. Given the good weather we've had this week, our contractor has made great progress! Let us hope Mother Nature continues to smile on the Buffalo Valley!

Trail users!

Issue: the "Road Closed" signs at trail/road intersections being turned or pushed over.
Answer: Someone not authorized, moved/turned/upset these signs. The end result is that the unpaved portion of the trail is STILL CLOSED.

As soon as we can, we will reopen the sections that are finished.

Happy Tuesday Trail users!

Just a quick little update today. Our contractors made it to Johnson Mill Road as of noon today, so work is continuing! The weather outlook for this week is promising so hopefully more of the surface will be installed and cured soon!

Again, we ask that you stay off the trail until the new surface has had time to settle ad cure. It takes a few days so even though it may LOOK like it is ready to go, IT IS NOT. A little patience now leads to a long life for the new surface.

Good morning Trail Users!

We just took a look out on the trail to check progress and things are moving right along. We are hoping for a good amount of work to be done while the sun is shining.

One thing that isn't helping is people and bikes on the trail. PLEASE STAY OFF THE TRAIL. Also, DO NOT move ANY of the signs on the trail INCLUDING the "Road Closed" signs. We know you're eager to get back out there, but if you want this great community resource to stay in good condition with a brand new surface, you HAVE to let the work get done.

Thank you!

Trail users — big news! 🎉

The Union County Trail Authority just secured nearly $1.8 million for the design and construction of the US Route 15 crossing on the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail — a huge milestone that’s been years in the making.

A massive thank‑you goes out to all the local (and not‑so‑local) supporters who’ve stood behind this project. The UCTA Board also extends deep appreciation to Secretary Michael Carroll, Secretary Cindy Dunn, Senator Gene Yaw, and their dedicated staffs for helping guide this grant to approval.

This progress wouldn’t have happened without the combined effort of everyone involved. THANK YOU and see you on the trail! 🚴‍♀️🌿
