Good morning trail users!
When it comes to our current closure are often asked "What did this project do to the trail?" So we thought we'd take the time to lay out some detials:
1. Resurfacing - The main point of this project was to replace the surface of the trail between Bull Run Crossing and Meadow Green Drive. We didn't pave it, we replaced the "gravel" portion of the trail with new "gravel".
2. Why do you say "gravel"? - The surface (both new and old) isn't really just gravel or stone. It is a Penn State University developed material called Trail Surface Aggregate or TSA. TSA is a specific mixture of stone and binding material developed for use on non-motorized trails. When applied properly and allowed to cure it becomes almost pavement-hard and will last for many years.
3. Why did you do this project? - The BVRT, mainly built in 2011, has seen 15 years of sustained use. Much like any infrastructure, it needs maintained. In 2018 or 19, representatives from Penn State's Dirt and Gravel Road Program (developer of TSA, see above) took a look at and were impressed by the condition of the trail surface. But, then 2020 came along and the COVID pandemic drove many more people outdoors for activities and use of the BVRT more than DOUBLED. By 2023 (if not sooner) the Trail Authority recognized it was time for a new surface and began the process of initiating this needed capital improvement project.
4. What else was done? - The trail also has new, replacement cross-pipes in 8 different locations and you'll notice that a significant amount of split rail fencing has been removed. These improvements will allow better movement of stormwater and reduce the maintenance needs of the trail. There is ongoing vegetation management happening as well.
5. What's next? - As soon as the new trail surface passes inspection, the trail will be reopened. The Trail Authority is waiting for sign off from our engineer.
We hope this answers some questions, and, of course, if you have more, drop us a line and we'll do our best to answer them!
