Great recap of CA Outdoor Economy Summit. It’s pretty cool to come into an event like this with insight from sport tourism work from all over the U.S.

“The afternoon session on gravel cycling and destination stewardship — led by Juan Dela Roca of Gravel Adventure Field Guide and Aviva North of the Coraggio Group — pushed that argument further, exploring how communities can use underutilized routes and off-peak seasons to build year-round outdoor recreation economies. The session drew on case studies from California and destinations nationwide, making the case that gravel tourism isn’t a niche pursuit — it’s a practical tool for activating underutilized assets and attracting diverse visitors while embedding stewardship into the development approach from the start.”

We had a fantastic GAFG bicycle shop tour in Chicago for the distribution of the Gunnison County guidebook. The shop game is being well played in this city. It is after all the birthplace of Schwinn Bicycles. Side note, check out the to learn more about that story.

Big thanks go to . She represents so well on a local level. Lindsey’s used three guides now to visit the Maine Woods, Pueblo County, and Antigua, Guatemala. She really helped facilitate a phenomenal week in Chicago. Along with her, and helped make our social ride in Evanston super fun. Thank you to everyone who joined and listened to our story. Now go ride Gunnison County gravel!

The trip also was a chance to ride the Amtrak SW Chief from Trinidad to Chicago. Every town with a stop along this line is a gravel bike destination town. With connectivity to Kansas City as well, there continues to be cycling tourism potential. Mentioned in the Raton-Angel Fire Colfax County GAFG is the story of how Ernie Blake used the SW Chief route to market and promote Taos Ski Valley to Chicagoans. It would be really cool to see this rail line evolve with cycling tourism integrated into service platform.
