🚨 MIOSHA has recorded the third and fourth workplace fatalities of 2026.

According to information reported to MIOSHA by the employer, on Feb. 17, a 21-year-old laborer was fatally injured while working in a pit to unplug a groundwater well at a vacant residence undergoing maintenance prior to resale. The employee poured muriatic acid into the well in an attempt to clear it and was overcome by air contaminants, most likely hydrogen sulfide. A 20-year-old painter then entered the pit to attempt a rescue and was also overcome by air contaminants.

Both employees died as a result of the incident.

Confined spaces and low-lying areas can quickly become deadly when toxic gases are present. Hydrogen sulfide is highly toxic and can overcome workers without warning.

Every workplace fatality is a tragic reminder that workplace safety and health must remain a top priority.
