Thank you to all the volunteers who came to today's work day! And huge thanks to the City of Lenoir, NC Government work crews who did the lion's share of tree cutting! We were able to finish some tricky tree removals and reroute a portion of the main loop damaged by a tree blow down. All trails are open and rideable with the exception of a short hike a bike section on the Flip Turn trail from a large oak tree blow down. Enjoy!

We just completed a damage survey of the trail. Damage is massive. There are 3 or 4 dozen trees down across the trail. Trees are down about every 100 ft. There isn't a foot of trail that isn't impacted.

The trail will be unrideable for the foreseeable future. There will need to be 100s of volunteer hours to get the trail rideable. We know this isn't the top priority for many folks in our area, but as we recover from the damage of Helene, outdoor recreation is part of who we are and why we live here.

Multiply the damage at Zacks by every other trail in Western NC and you can get a sense of the impact on mountain biking and outdoor recreation in our area.

There are many widow makers on the trail, please be hyper aware of your surroundings out there. We will begin coordinating trail work efforts in the near future.

09/29/2024

We are going out today to assess the storm damage to the trails. Please refrain from riding until we can give a detailed assessment.

Join us on Saturday, March 23rd from 9am to 12 pm for a trail work day! We will be focusing on re-rocking two stream crossings and rehabbing berms. Bring flat shovels, hard rakes and 5 gallon buckets if you have them, otherwise tools will be available. This trail work day is being organized by Caldwell County Youth Mountain Biking , our local middle school and high school NICA MTB team as part of the North Carolina Interscholastic Cycling League Trail Week. The goal of the NC NICA Trail Week is for student-athletes and coaches from all over the state to put in at least 1 hour of trail work between 3/18 and 3/24 for a goal total of 1000 hours! Come join the fun! We will meet in the Zack's Fork Rd. parking lot directly across from the greenway bridge to the trail. Bring appropriate shoes, work gloves, food and water. See you Saturday!

All trails are open! Be mindful of sticks and take a moment to clear some off the trail while you ride - the rear derailleur you save may be your own. Big thanks to our sawyer team for cutting out the jumbled mess on the gravity lines in the hellish heat and humidity Monday!

Small trees down - 1 on Zacks Fork and 1 on Flip Turn. Both are easy to get past.
