Lessons are generally one hour long; the first half being dedicated to grooming and the second half to riding. Through grooming, tacking and riding their horse, participants develop skills that produce wide-reaching improvements in areas such as; fine and gross motor skills, motor planning, sequencing, memory, attention span, balance, hand/eye coordination, right/left handedness, communication, body awareness, flexibility, teamwork, socialization, coordination and improved self-esteem. The recreational aspect of STAR's program proves invaluable for these special persons who often cannot participate in conventional sports.

Welcome to STAR, Brooklyn! 🎉🐎

Brooklyn is a 20-year-old bay Quarter Horse mare who has spent much of her life enjoying the trails and has even participated in a few parades!

Brooklyn’s owner is getting ready to start an exciting new chapter — heading off to college as she begins her journey toward becoming a veterinarian.

Knowing she won’t have as much time to spend with Brooklyn, she thought Brooklyn might enjoy having a new job and that STAR could be a great fit!

We are so excited to welcome Brooklyn to the barn, get to know her sweet personality, and see how she likes life at STAR. Please help us give Brooklyn a warm STAR welcome!

We’re so thankful for Dr. Jack Haney, DDS and his support!

Earlier this year, he chose STAR as the nonprofit to benefit from his summer teeth whitening special. It was a unique opportunity for individuals to get a teeth whitening while also supporting STAR’s mission!

On Friday, Dr. Haney stopped by the barn to present us a $4,000 check from the summer special!

Thank you Dr. Haney and all those that took advantage of the special! These funds will go directly toward changing lives in our programs!

Never Forget. Honoring Our Heroes at STAR. 🇺🇸

Today, on the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, the STAR Family paused during our Heroes & Horses Social for a moment of silence — remembering the lives lost, the heroes who answered the call, and the enduring strength of our nation.

In a poignant tribute to our Heroes & Horses, Cathi and Marc Churchwell presented STAR with a truly extraordinary gift: a U.S. flag flown over the United States Capitol on April 1, 2011.

As our Heroes & Horses program serves the veterans who give so much for our freedom and safety, displaying this flag in our Great Room serves as a daily reminder of service, sacrifice, and resilience.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Cathi and Marc for this profound gift, and to all the brave men and women who serve our country and communities. We will never forget. ❤️🤍💙

Welcome to STAR, Dallas! 🎉🐎

Meet Dallas, a 21-year-old bay Quarter Horse who originally hails from Florida! Dallas belongs to our Programs Manager, Kara, and she comes to STAR with quite the resumé.

Over the years, Dallas has done a little bit of everything — barrels, poles, roping, western and ranch pleasure, trail riding, parades, and even a little jumping! She also spent several years as a lesson horse and kids’ show horse, helping young riders learn the ropes.

For the last few years, Dallas has been enjoying a quieter life out in the pasture. Lately, though, she has been showing Kara that she might just be ready to have a job again. So, we thought we would see what she thinks about joining the STAR Herd!

With all of her experience, we are excited to get to know Dallas, introduce her to life at STAR, and see if she decides this is the next job for her.

Welcome, Maya! 🎉

Maya is STAR’s current fall equine intern. She is a sophomore pre-vet animal science major at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. She’s a recreational Western rider, and she has a strong passion for Equine and Large Animal medicine. She is so excited to learn more about the therapeutic riding process, and gain more equine experience from this opportunity at STAR! If you see her in the barn, swing by and say hello!
