GET BACK TO THE BASICS......
Coaching and correcting a Squat in 2 Reps.
Trainers, Coaches & Parents. There are more and more injuries each year in youth athletics. Youth sports are at an all time competitive high. Our athletes are grinding year round with very little breaks. Sports are overlapping and kids are getting injured younger and younger each year. We have gotten so wrapped up in sport specific training that we are forgetting to coach and teach our kids the basics and master the Foundational movements. We have got to get back to coaching the basic fundamentals.
Here is one of our Athletes doing a Squat Assessment.
As you can see in the video below, before she even took her first rep, her eyes were looking to the floor. When our eyes go down, our body forward and down.
As she squats during her first rep, her entire upper body goes down. She collapses at the waist and nearly touches her chest to her quads. This athlete has very good hip mobility. This squat is just lack of coaching and being taught how to squat properly.
As she comes back up, you can see that her eyes are still pointed down. Her chin is tucked.
The fix was easy. We coached her to keep her head up, eyes forward and chin neutral. Push her hips back, keep her core tight and engaged and drive through the heels on the way up...... THAT'S IT.
Her second rep was 100% better. Her weight is no longer coming forward. Her back is flat, chin is neutral, eyes forward and her weight is on her heels.
Our Athletes are smart, they are athletic and they will learn fast if we start coaching them the right way. GET BACK TO THE BASICS and let's start preventing injuries.
