THROWBACK THURSDAY: Our Legend's Series
Floyd Santee III
-Todd Spadt

This week’s legend is Walnutport native and now Germansville resident Floyd Santee III or “Chip” as everyone knows him.

Chip had an incredible record at the Mahoning ¼ mile circle bullring amassing 36 total career wins at Mahoning. Thirty- three in the modifieds and 3 in the late models. Chips 1st Modified win was May 2 1992 and his last in August 22 2015.

Chip got his interest racing through his dad Floyd II who was a racer himself and also a Mahoning promoter. Chip was around racing his whole life.

Chip first racing experience was watching the races with family at Dorney park. Ahh thank God for Dorney the training ground for many racers and tracks.

Chips first experience with Mahoning was in the 70’s when his dad raced their a few times. Chip would go watch.

With all the racers around him Chip wanted to join the legion of racers and started his career in 1985. Chip was thrust into action the last three races of the season. Chip remembers his first race at Dorney. It rained earlier and as I would come out of turn 4 there was a puddle. “I would be sideways till turn one lap after lap.” “I didn’t make the cut in the heat but started on pole in the consi and finished third. Remember folks these are the days 30 cars showed up and it was always three heats and a Consi. It was not a given to qualify. Chip elected to go to the rear for the feature because of little experience and out of respect for his veteran competitors. Well maybe Chip should have started up front as he finished 7th in his maiden voyage in the late models.

Chip raced in the late models and raced four sportsman races at Dorney. At Mahoning, he drove late models and modifieds.

Chip remembers his first race at Mahoning. It was under the guidance and direction of Ward Crozier. Chip was leading the feature but with 2-3 to go and Chip developed a flat under caution and was black flagged.” That’s the one that got away.” That was a tough one to swallow”

“I drove three years in the late models. Chip raced modifieds at Mahoning from 1990 to2002. He took four years off and then raced from 2007 to 2016. After 1989 Chip sold his late models to Paul Koehler Jr a late model kingpin at Mahoning. Paul and his brother drove them cars. Chip recalls selling his modifieds to legend Bobby Jones, Zane Zeiner and Eric Kocher over the years

Chip drove for many owners along the way. Bruce Muthard owned cars for my dad and I raced the last 3 seasons for him at the end of 1985 and 1986 in an old 1955 Chevy at Dorney Park Chip was amused by the fact that the headers were put upside down and right up against the interior and I couldn’t touch the sides or Id burn myself.

1987 and 1988 saw Chip drive for his dad at Mahoning and 1989 for himself the last year I ran a late model. In Chips 1st year in a modified he drove for legend car owner Marvin Bartholomew. 1991 and 1992 saw Chip return to drive for his dad. In 1992 He teamed up with close family friend Andy Winemiller will stein to form S&W Motorsports. And we were a team till 2000. During that time Keith Kocher, Tim Santee, Scott Strohl drove for Chip in his self-owned car.

After Chips 4-year hiatus he returned to drive for Floyd II until 2016. In 2008 Chip drove the famous #71 for Terry Zacharuus and 2009 he drove for Eric Beers. Lots of legends in this paragraph. Chip last raced in 2016 and took a 3rd because his dad took over promotion and Chip helped on the track. Chip was gonna race some but when Chip went on vacation his dad sold the car. He laughed. Plus, I had surgery on my rotator cuff

Chip talked about two of his favorite cars; the late model that we ran in 1989 that we built and the modified I bought off the late Keith Kocher in 2007.

Mahoning was definitely Chips home track and the key to getting around quickly was “being smooth.” “The tough part is you had to look 3-4 rows ahead of you while racing there. “
“What made Mahoning special was his close proximity to the track and the level of competition that raced there. “In the early days the crowd was so into it then everyone would talk about the races during the week” “Me and my fellow competitors actually would hang out sometimes during the week and it became a family type thing.”

Chip garnered two modified championships in 2002 and 2007 which were his most memorable moments at Mahoning. Chip also had an incredible run of 2nd or 3rd in points through 1992 to 2002 and might have won another one if he didn’t miss a week. 2007 was sweet for Chip as he won the championship in his 1st year back after a 4-year hiatus.

Chip said it was special to win at Mahoning as it was his hometrack. “It was great to beat some of the best drivers around and boy their sure was a lot of them.”

When Chip was asked what was his biggest win at Mahoning. Chip said all were special because we raced to win each night but only one out of many can win on a given night.” “The goals were just to qualify on most nights then try to win a feature. Chip remembers vividly winning a 100 lapper in 2008. Another night we had 4-20s at Mahoning for the mods and I won best overall which was an average of the 4 finishers. “Probably the sweetest night at Mahoning was the last race of 2002 where I won the feature which gave me enough points to win the championship that same night.”

Chip had much to say when asked who his toughest competitors at Mahoning were. He even broke them down into years talk about a memory whew!

1987 to 1989 “I drove late models it was easy John and Terry Markovic and Rocket Rod Snyder were my toughest competitors.”

In the modifieds “there were so many good tough drivers like George Wambold, Freddy Hamm, John Markovic again, Paul Bauscher, Earl Paules, Eric Beers, Scott Lesher, Rocket Rod Snyder, Bobby Jones and Nevin George.

Chip had many numbers over the years on his cars because he wanted to be different then his dad but then he started using the #5 his dad used later in his career. Chips cars were usually black; blue and red. Chip also ran a #27 late model which was a combination of a #2 and #7 because #9 was my favorite but I couldn’t use it because Eric Beers had it. “

Chip talked about many funny and crazy stories. He remembers the craziest story was one night me and John Markovic were not too happy with one another for a few races and John walked around my car after warmups and spread peanut shells around my car for bad luck. Chip said I was mad but said to myself did he really just do that I was sort of mad but laughed it off plus I went and spread salt around his car later.” I have to ask John about that we did a story on him a few weeks ago. Maybe he forgot or he forgot on purpose. LOL.

Chip remember some of the drivers would try to get in others heads or [posturing Chip remembers a time in 2007 when it was the last points race of the season. “I Scott Lesher and “Hurricane Earl Paules had a shot at the championship. Chip stated “Earl had a banner put up on his trailer prob 25ft that said your 2007 champ Scott Lesher. Earl tried to get in my head that night but I still ended up winning the championship. Me and Scott were good friends so Scott took the banner and put my name where his was and put it in his garage.

Chip remembers another time in 1992 when he was in the black #14 which was the S&W car. After a good night at Mahoning with his dad’s car. Chip wanted to go to Evergreen the next day but dad said “no”. So, Chip and Andy then took the S&W car up there and after a caution marred event in which Chip came home 2nd in only his 2nd or 3rd time there. Chip was happy but Dad wasn’t as he told Chip to not take the car there. Chip said we didn’t go there with your(dads) car we took ours. They all laughed about it in a race where Chip would have won as the front two cars spun and one was sent to the rear while the other was sent to the front.

Chip did say he wishes he could remember all the stories we laughed a lot and we closed the place (Mahoning) up weekly with my crew and other racers.” We had a group Bill Teel, Keith Kocher, Scott Lesher, The Strohls and more that would hang out drink a few and hang out till the official would drive around on his golfcart and tell us we had to leave.

“When Chuck Pollack ran Mahoning, he would let us hang out long after the last checkered and we would actually lock up. We would stay there till 12-1am but one year there was a new official and he sorted wanted to be a hero. He called the cops on us one night and caused some trouble but Chuck smoothed it over and that official only lasted a year.”

Chip remembers “the ones that got away at Mahoning. “It was 1995 and me and Rod Snyder were in a tight points battle that went down to the last night. It was the first 100 lapper Mahoning ever had. I was ahead of Rod running 3rd with 30 to go and got taken out by a lap car. That ended my championship hopes. In 1990 “my first year in the mods I was leading with three to go and I was approaching a lap car and he was losing fuel and I spun out. Chip said I remember 10-12 other times when I got taken out or something stupid happened.”

Chip had some weekly traditions while going to the racetrack, he used to go by Pizza Hut right at 2pm while going to Mahoning. “My gut started to hurt because I was nervous if it wasn’t hurting, I knew I wouldn’t have a good night at the track. Another time Chip went to Stafford Springs he was in the modified tour but “I was really nervous and shaking I even tried to get in the other side of the car he laughed.” It rained ½ thru and I never went back there. See even Mahoning legends get nervous before three races.

I asked Chip about giving advice to drivers starting out today and he said race them like you want to be raced.

Chip had and still has a huge racing family. Many greats on this list. They include Jack and Roger Heffelfinger, Rick McNeil, Joe Roberts and the following Santee’s; Santee’s Adam and nephews Austin Santee and of course his dad. His racing family was also his inspirations growing up. He also idoled Freddy Hamm, George Wambold and Paul Bauscher.

Chip wanted to take time to thank his crew members and career helpers along the way. over the years. “When you race as long as I did you forget a few but here it goes.” Richard Kressly, Scott Strohl, Stevie Moore, Keith Kocher Roberts Moser, Johnny Moser, Pete Muffley, Tommy Phillips Sr. and jr, Danny Smith, Puda, Josh Sebelin and my dad and uncles.

Chip has been retired since 2016 and is just working. “I haven’t even been going to the races.”

Chip also raced on the dirt at Lindas in a 4cyl and a street stock at Hill valley and also Grandview on the dirt. He also raced mods at Lancaster, New Egypt, Clearfield and Tioga and 3 ROC at Flemington and Spencer.
I did like both Earnhardt’s in Nascar but now don’t really have a favorite.

I asked Chip what race fans may not know about him and I answered it for him. If he raced as fast on the racetrack as on the dance floor no wonder, he was a 36-time feature winner. Chip had many moves on the dancefloor just like the racetrack.

Chip had an incredible knowledge of his racing career as he just about wrote his own story.

Take note race fans Chip would love to race one more time in most any divisions with at least a competitive car and a safe car “I may be 57 but I feel I still would be able to be competitive in a car and if I wouldn’t I would be ok with that as well. I have had a great ride good times and some bad times but I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Chip had an impeccable memory of his racing career and we talked off the record about so many things like track management, race pricing and other stories related to racing. I could have made this story even much longer.

Rain Delay Doesn’t Slow Lou Strohl on Busy Night at Mahoning Valley Speedway Park

By. GENEVIVE YAMELSKI

Lehighton, Pa. (06/06/2026) Despite an afternoon rain shower that forced a delay before heat races could begin, track crews and competitors worked quickly to get the racing surface back into shape. With time becoming a factor, only the Modified division completed heat races while all other divisions lined up based on the original lineup.

The Modified feature saw Earl Paules race his way to the lead on lap two before Lou Strohl worked his way forward from the second row. Lou Strohl took over the top spot by lap eight and found himself challenged through multiple cautions throughout the event. A lap ten incident involving Kyle Strohl, Jaden Brown and Tyler Wager reshuffled the running order and allowed Austin Kochenash to move into second on the restart. Kochenash advanced to second on the restart and remained within striking distance, but Lou Strohl was able to hold him off through the closing laps to score the victory. Kochenash crossed the line second with Paules finishing third.

Brian Romig Sr. and Brian Romig Jr. raced side-by-side through the opening laps of the Late Model feature before Romig Sr. slowed on the speedway, bringing out the caution and his night ending there. Following the restart, Romig Jr. moved into the lead and spent the remainder of the race holding off points leader Marc Aigeldinger. When the checkered flag flew, Romig Jr. collected both the victory and the boosted $1,100 winner’s payout. Aigeldinger finished second with Mike Vanfossen rounding out the top three.

The Street Stocks saw trouble early in the feature when Cody Geist and Jamie Smith became hooked together, bringing out a caution. Both drivers were able to continue, though Geist would eventually pull off the speedway a few laps later. On the restart, Brandon Christman wasted little time making his move to the front, taking the lead from Josh Kuronya. As the race progressed, Kuronya slipped backward through the field while Adam Steigerwalt and Randy Ahner worked their way into the top three. Christman remained strong out front despite late pressure from Steigerwalt, leading the remainder of the 30-lap feature to score the victory. Steigerwalt crossed the line second with Ahner finishing third.

Jeremy Henry and Travis Solomon battled side-by-side at the start before Solomon used the outside lane to take over the lead on lap two. Several cautions interrupted the event, including a flat tire for John Bennett and an incident involving James Tout and Shayne Geist that ended both drivers' nights early. Henry later spun while attempting to track down the leaders, bringing out another caution. Through every restart, Solomon remained composed at the front of the field and ultimately drove away with the win. Devin Schmidt finished second while Ryan Berger completed the top three.

The Pro 4 division produced the night's only caution-free feature. Early contact between Ron Pierson Jr. and Rich Pursell briefly shuffled the running order, but all drivers were able to continue. Tyler Stangle worked his way into the lead on lap seven and appeared poised for victory until Terry Peters found speed late in the race. Peters completed the winning pass on lap eighteen and held on over the final circuits to capture the win. Stangle settled for second with Pierson Jr. finishing third.

Jaden Brown earned the victory in the Stage 1 Modified feature after taking over the lead on lap four. Brett Smith grabbed the top spot at the start, but Brown worked underneath him to assume control and never looked back. Brown paced the field through the remainder of the 20-lap event to secure the victory. Smith crossed the line second while Darean Danyluk completed the top three.

An early caution slowed the 20-lap Northeast Antique Auto Racing Association (NAARA) Vintage Modified feature when Jerry Garris suffered a broken driveshaft. Once racing resumed, Maggie Wambold worked her way to the front and maintained control of the event. Darren Cox finished second while Gary Hallman completed the podium at the checkered flag.
