On Saturday, May 16 at 10:30 we will formally dedicate the new ART PARK sign during CHALK-THE-PARK. This sign was made possible by a 100% Louisiana Attractions Support Grant (LASG) for Enhancement and Marketing from the Louisiana Office of Tourism. The sign was fabricated of steel by Kisatchie Products (Will Jenkins) and the artwork on the letters was designed and installed by Smoking Monk Studios (Liz and Jed Cornett) of Forest Hills. A great group of volunteers assisted with the installation of the letters. Join us for CHALK THE PARK on May 16 and participate in the dedication of this wonderful addition to the Leesville Art Park.

CHALK-A-BLOCK rebrands into CHALK THE PARK

Over 10 years ago during MAYFEST in the Leesville Main Street District the Rotary Club of Leesville partnered with GALLERY ONE EIIIEVEN and sponsored CHALK-A-BLOCK – a space at the festival where kids of all ages could express themselves on the pavement in chalk. It immediately became a focal point of MAYFEST and a tremendous outlet for creativity. When MAYFEST moved to the Fairgrounds and the “arts” component was removed from the festival, CHALK-A-BLOCK went into hiatus.

Now the Chalk Art Festival is back, rebranded and better than ever. On Saturday, May 16 from 10-3 CHALK THE PARK will take place in the Leesville Art Park on Abe Allen Drive in Leesville. Now sponsored by the Rotary Club of Leesville, GALLERY ONE EIIIEVEN, The D.A.R.E program and Leesville Kiwanis, the festival will bring chalk art, creativity, music and food to the Art Park for a day of fun for kids and families.

Volunteers have come out of the woodwork to bring this event back to life, led by Heather Houston of the gallery. This year there will be performances on the small stage in the Art Park by members of the Leesville Community Orchestra and others, coordinated and arranged by Nancy El Koubi. The D.A.R.E. program of the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office will be on hand as will the Kiwanis Club, providing Hot Dogs and drinks.

As always, the Rotary Club of Leesville will be there providing chalk for everyone to use on the walking track around the park. This year GALLERY ONE EIIIEVEN will sponsor four “Featured Artists” on site doing chalk paintings and working with everyone during the day, assisting where needed and providing guidance on sidewalk chalk painting.

It will be a great day for kids in the parish, as they can experience CHALK THE PARK and the Junior League TOUCH A TRUCK event all on May 16 – a wonderful Family Day Out in Leesville!

For over a decade the Rotary Club of Leesville and GALLERY ONE EIIIEVEN sponsored and presented CHALK-A-BLOCK at MAYFEST in the Leesville Main Street District. Since MAYFEST has been rebranded and moved to the Fairgrounds, the Chalk event was postponed.

We are now planning on moving the event to the Leesville Art Park in the spring with the intent to make CHALK THE PARK as an annual, and bigger event involving chalk art and music, with other items under discussion.

If you are interested in bringing energy, ideas and commitment to helping with this project, please come to a meeting on the north end of the Leesville Art Park across from West Leesville Elementary School on Thursday, February 26 at 4:00. The meeting will be to set a date in the Spring for the event and to sign up volunteers for various tasks.

We welcome other service clubs to join us in creating a great Chalk Art event for children and adults.

FRIENDS OF THE ART PARK...we need a favor. We have completed the new big ART PARK letters in the park. We need to document some public reaction and comments for our final grant report. Please go by the park, use the letters for a Selfie and post on this page with some comments. The sooner the better.....THANKS

GALLERY ONE EIIIEVEN secured a grant from the Louisiana Department of Tourism to enhance the LEESVILLE ART PARK with new, impressive monumental letters to bring attention to the park and create a photo-op area. The large metal signs are complete and we will be installing them on Saturday July 12 and Sunday July 13.

Once the letters are in place, a muralist will come and paint them.

We are looking for volunteers to assist with the installation. Tasks will be to auger holes for the bases and setting concrete in the holes, then Sunday coming back and standing the letters.

If you, your friends or a group would like to assist please show up at the park at 8:00 AM both days. Even if you want to be a go-for, help with hydration and give us support, please come and help.
