squaredUP athletes practice a specific blend of yoga and pilates with strong, fluid movements and controlled breathing to increase mobility and flexibility... it’s not your mama's yoga!

We just wrapped up a 6 week session of athletic mobility with some teens at the Kansas City MLB Urban Youth Academy... they were so much fun to work with. 🧘🏽‍♂️🧘🏻‍♀️ They said, “we need yoga every day.” 💙💛

I recently read a blog post from a top sports performance coach, Eric Cressey, about mobility training... here are the key takaways and what you can expect to get from training with me at squaredUP!

1. soft tissue work - foam rolling
2. breathing - "The yoga folks have been right about breathing for a long time."
3. joint-by-joint approach - every joint needs both movement and stability
4. laxity is not mobility - super flexible people are not necessarily stable in that postition
5. "More deposits than withdraws" - "it's easier to maintain mobility than it is to lose it and get it back" We have to make a habit of practicing mobility movements and working to strengthen around the joints because we "withdraw" during stress of sports, injury, and nutrition.

Data from the Eastern Bloc continually showed the effectiveness of a multi-lateral approach (multiple sports) to youth development vs early specialization.
-
Early specialization is usually defined as playing a single sport 8+ months out of the year.
-
More organized sport hours per week than their age.
-
Multiple leagues in the same sport at the same time.
-
Sport specialization isn’t going away so adjusting to what it is will be necessary.
-
Exposing young athletes to free play In the form of obstacle courses. is awesome with this. Free play and programs that emphasize a robust environment of movement/agility/decision making challenges/balance/strength/etc.....all around athletic development. We often need to get youth athletes out of the common one sided sports that dominate early specialization sports.

“Adding two yoga classes per week to his training “gives me a competitive edge,” he says. “You’ve got to recover as hard as you train.” Jimmie Ward, NFL player

At home in Mobile during the offseason, the San Francisco 49ers player gets ‘a great sweat’ and much more at his yoga practice.

Many risk factors lead to higher fall risk, however, falls are NOT a normal part of aging and can be decreased with certain preventative measures.
