I put a lot of bass in the boat yesterday. There are lots of fish shallow, but the bigger fish were still hanging on the edges waiting for the water to warm up a little. Water temps ranged from 49-51 degrees.

When things are going great it's natural to take your health for granted. You make plans. You attack your dreams. You don't worry about time. You just know that if you work hard enough, everything will work out. All it takes is a simple fall to change all that. My regular fishing partner, my dad, took a fall while getting ready to take his great grandkids ice fishing. He is recovering after having surgery to reattach all the tendons to his knee, and then a couple of weeks later, I took a fall.
Today was the first time I was able to take care of my ice fishing gear after my fall 3 weeks ago. It's safe to say that Otter Sled covers do not repel water. Luckily, I hadn't brought out my auger, batteries, and electronics yet! I think I can salvage everything but the fish hooks...

I do a lot of preparation for my ice fishing trips, especially derbies. You never feel like you have an adequate amount of time to do it right. I was zoned in this morning. I had my detailed plan in motion.
This is the quickest ice fishing trip I have ever taken. Unfortunately, it was an even quicker slip off my icy front steps this morning. I am down and out! I'm not sure I have ever been in this kind of pain before.
For those able to watch the video, WARNING, it is pretty rough. I do make a mean set of steps, though.

Some days you wake up ready to face the world. You're confident. You think you can solve all of life's little problems. They may be be problems that are close to your heart or they may just be something that is there that you try to tackle just for the challenge of it. But... you fail. You are reminded that it isn't your job to "fix" everything, and then nothing seems right.
Today I woke up uncertain, not confident and not ready to face the world at all. I believe you just have to hand it over to God, and that is how it is going for me today.
This 15+ pike won't crack the top five in the derby, but I am on some big fish. We'll see what happens. Fishing is what I do, and I can only hope all my prayers will be answered today.

My brother and I are still at 1 & 2 for the New England Ice Fishing Championship. The tournament continues through this week. We've had chances at bigger fish, but have not been able to ice them. Between breaking them off and lines cutting into the ice, it has been a challenge. We hope to upgrade later in the week, however. It will be a dog fight to the end. I'm sure of it.
