PLEASE SLOW DOWN ON RIVER ROAD — ESPECIALLY AROUND THE BENDS BY RIVER’S EDGE.

This is now the fourth animal we have taken in after it was hit by a vehicle near our property. And unfortunately, these incidents aren’t happening because the bends are impossible to see around — they’re happening because some vehicles are traveling entirely too fast to stop when something is in the roadway.

River Road is not a racetrack. No one is impressed by someone flying around those bends at 70, 80, or 90 mph. What’s even more upsetting is that, far too often, the driver doesn’t even stop to see what they hit or whether the animal is still alive.

I’ve always told my kids, just because they’re little doesn’t mean their lives matter any less. Wildlife lives here too, and they deserve a little consideration.

Our most recent rescue was this goose. Thankfully, we couldn’t find any external injuries, and his upper leg seemed to be the main issue. We gave him a safe place to rest and recover, and today we took him outside so he could eat and move around.

After a little while, he eventually meandered down the hillside, made his way into the river, and headed back home. ❤️

We have contacted PennDOT about the speeding and asked whether additional signage could be placed along this stretch of River Road. We were told that because there are already two bends in this area, adding additional signs could potentially create more distractions and increase the risk of accidents.

So, this post is the next thing I know to do.

Please slow down.

Not only for the wildlife, but for the people who live here, our customers pulling in and out of River’s Edge, families traveling this road, and everyone else who deserves to get where they’re going safely.

You might only save a few seconds by speeding around those bends. You could take a life just as quickly.

If this post convinces even one person to take their foot off the gas and slow down, then it was worth posting.

🌊 RIVER’S EDGE DAILY UPDATE — SATURDAY, AUGUST 22 🌊

📏 River Level: 6.08 ft

🚣 TODAY’S RUN STATUS:
✅ Single Kayaks
✅ Tandem Kayaks
✅ Canoes
❌ Tubes are CLOSED today due to the higher river level.

The river is moving, the boats are ready, and we’re sending out everything except the floaty donuts today! 😎🛶

🦦 OTIS’ DAILY REPORT:
Otis took one look at the river, grabbed a paddle, tightened his life jacket and announced:

“6.08?! PERFECT. I LIKE A RIVER WITH A LITTLE ATTITUDE.”

We have since reminded Otis that confidence and actual skill are two very different things. 😂

🐟 FISH FACT OF THE DAY:
Longnose gar have been around for more than 100 million years and can gulp air from the surface when there isn’t enough oxygen in the water. Basically, they looked at extinction and said, “Nah, we’re busy.” 🐟🦖

The Kiski is high, swift, and showing off a little today! Please stay alert near the riverbank and always give the water the respect it deserves. 💙

🦦 Otis’s Adventure of the Day:
Otis showed up wearing a raincoat, swim goggles, and two life jackets. When Harold asked if that seemed excessive, Otis replied, “There is no such thing as overprepared—only under-accessorized.” 😂

🐟 Fish Fact:
American eels can absorb oxygen through their skin, allowing them to travel short distances across wet grass or muddy ground!

🌊 River’s Edge Daily Update 🌊
The river level was 6.1 feet, and we ran everything today—kayaks, canoes, tandems, and tubes! Thank you to everyone who came out and spent the day on the river with us! 🛶☀️
🦦 Otis’s Adventure of the Day:
At 6.1 feet, Otis appointed himself the official “River Speed Inspector.” Unfortunately, his inspection consisted of launching a tube, yelling “FOR SCIENCE!”, and floating past the shop before anyone could explain that inspectors usually carry clipboards. 😂
🐟 Creepy River Fish Fact:
The eggs of a longnose gar are poisonous to humans and many other animals! The fish itself isn’t poisonous—but its tiny eggs are definitely not something you want on the menu. 😳

🌊 RIVER’S EDGE DAILY UPDATE 🌊

The Kiski was sitting at 5.8 feet, and we ran kayaks, canoes, tandems, tubes and cooler carriers today! 🛶☀️ Thank you to everyone who came out and spent part of their day on the river with us!

🦦 OTIS’S DAILY ADVENTURE:
Otis appointed himself Director of River Traffic today. He stood on the dock with a whistle and three tiny homemade signs: “PADDLE,” “FLOAT,” and “SNACK BREAK.” Unfortunately, he kept mixing them up and sent two kayaks toward the snack counter while directing a bag of chips downriver. He insists the operation went “exactly according to plan.” 😂

🐟 FISH FACT:
Longnose gar eggs are poisonous to humans and many other mammals! The fish itself is edible, but eating its eggs can cause serious illness—making that prehistoric-looking river creature even creepier. 😳

🌊 RIVER’S EDGE DAILY UPDATE 🌊

What. A. DAY. 🛶😂

The river is sitting at 5.8 ft, we ran EVERYTHING today, and you guys kept us SUPER busy!
A huge thank you to everyone who came out, rented with us, stopped by the shop, and spent part of their Saturday at River’s Edge. We appreciate you more than you know! 🧡

🦦 OTIS’ DAILY DISASTER REPORT
Otis saw the crowd this morning and immediately promoted himself to “Director of River Traffic.”
Nobody approved this.
He showed up wearing a tiny reflective vest, carrying a clipboard, and blowing a whistle every time someone moved.
Kayak leaving? WHISTLE.
Van pulling in? WHISTLE.
Someone opening the shop door? WHISTLE.
We finally took the whistle away.
Ten minutes later, he came back with a megaphone.
We are beginning to regret giving him access to the supply closet. 😑😂

🐟 FISH FACT OF THE DAY
Common carp don’t have teeth in the front of their mouths — they have special “pharyngeal teeth” farther back in their throats that help crush and grind food.
So yes… somewhere in the river there’s basically a fish chewing with its throat teeth. 😳😂🐟

🛶 Today’s Status: We’re running EVERYTHING! Kayaks, tandem kayaks, canoes, tubes, and cooler carriers are all ready for adventure!

🦦 THE OTIS REPORT:
Otis has declared himself our new Launch Traffic Controller. He’s standing on the dock wearing a life jacket, waving two tiny orange flags, and yelling:

“KEEP IT MOVING, PEOPLE! THE RIVER ISN’T GOING TO FLOAT ITSELF!”

Unfortunately, nobody told him that directing every boat in the same direction isn’t exactly impressive. That’s just how the river works. 😂

🐟 CREEPY FISH FACT OF THE DAY:
A walleye’s eyes contain a special reflective layer that helps it see and hunt in dark, murky water. Shine a light toward one at night, and its eyes may appear to glow—meaning it could be watching you long before you ever notice it. 👀🐟

🌊 RIVER’S EDGE DAILY UPDATE 🌊

What. A. DAY. 😅

💧 River Level: 5.8 ft
🛶 Today’s Status: We ran EVERYTHING today — kayaks, canoes, tubes… the whole fleet was moving!

We’re wrapping things up for the evening, but don’t worry — we’ll be right back at it tomorrow! 🙌

🦦 OTIS’S ADVENTURE OF THE DAY:
Otis decided today was the perfect day to test his brand-new “high-speed river rescue system.”

The system consisted of:

A tube.
Two paddles duct-taped together.
One life jacket worn backwards.
And absolutely no plan whatsoever.

He launched himself from the bank yelling, “MAKE WAY! PROFESSIONAL COMING THROUGH!”

About twelve seconds later, he was spinning in circles, missing one paddle, and drifting past the shop screaming that the current was “way more aggressive than anticipated.” 😂

He eventually washed up downstream, soaking wet and furious, and is now claiming the entire thing was a successful emergency preparedness drill.

Nobody asked what the emergency was.

Otis says that is classified information. 🫡🦦

🐟 CREEPY KISKI FISH FACT OF THE DAY:
Freshwater drum have large, rounded teeth deep in their throats called pharyngeal teeth that they use to crush hard-shelled prey like snails and mussels. 😳

So yes… there are fish swimming around the Kiski with what basically amounts to a second set of crushing teeth in the back of their throat.

🌊 RIVER’S EDGE DAILY UPDATE — AUGUST 8 🛶🎣

Good morning from River’s Edge, where the river is sitting at 5.8 ft and WE ARE RUNNING EVERYTHING TODAY! 🎉

🛶 Kayaks — RUNNING
🛶 Canoes — RUNNING
🍩 Tubes — RUNNING
🚐 Shuttles — RUNNING

Basically, if it floats and we rent it… IT’S GOING. 😂

🦦 OTIS’ EXTREMELY CHAOTIC RIVER REPORT:

Otis apparently decided that being “Chief River Inspector” wasn’t enough responsibility, so this morning he promoted himself to:

DIRECTOR OF RIVER TRAFFIC, TUBE DEPLOYMENT & EMERGENCY SNACK OPERATIONS.

He currently has three whistles around his neck, a walkie-talkie he absolutely does not know how to use, one tiny orange traffic cone, and a clipboard with nothing written on it.

So far he has:

💥 attempted to direct a kayak into a parking space
💥 yelled “LAUNCH THE DONUTS!” at the tube crew
💥 stopped Harold the Blue Heron for “operating suspiciously long legs without a permit”
💥 declared the snack cooler a LEVEL FIVE EMERGENCY after discovering somebody ate the last cheese crackers
💥 blown his whistle so many times that absolutely nobody is listening anymore

Harold has officially requested that management “remove the otter from command.”

Management declined.

Otis is now standing beside the river yelling:

“5.8 FEET! FULL SEND! RELEASE THE FLEET!”

We have lost control of the situation. 😂🦦

🐟 FISH FACT OF THE DAY:
Channel catfish have an incredible sense of taste — and they don’t just taste with their mouths! They have taste receptors all over their bodies, which helps them locate food even in muddy water.

📏 River Level: 6.5 ft

The river is too high for tubes today, so tube trips are not running.

We are still running kayaks, canoes, and everything else, and River’s Edge will be open all day! 🛶🎣

👕🎽🫟 OTIS & HAROLD’S TIE-DYE SHOWDOWN

Things have gotten completely out of control over our brand-new handmade tie-dyed River’s Edge T-shirts.

Otis grabbed one shirt, tied it around his head like a battle bandana, climbed onto the bait freezer, and declared himself:

“SUPREME COMMANDER OF THE TIE-DYE COLLECTION!”

Harold immediately swooped down from the roof, stole two shirts with his feet, and began circling the shop while screaming:

“THE SKY BELONGS TO HAROLD!”

Otis is now chasing him down the riverbank in a kayak, waving a pool noodle like a sword, while Harold dive-bombs him with wet minnows.

Management has attempted peace negotiations.

Management was hit with a minnow.

🐟 RIVER FACT OF THE DAY

River otters can hold their breath for up to 8 minutes and often slide down muddy banks just for fun—basically the river’s most enthusiastic troublemakers.
