Thanks Wayne for coming out to Sphygmus and sharing his knowledge with us. BJJ is all about a shared experience and it doesn't matter if you bring 30+ years of experience with you as did Wayne or if you have only tried BJJ a few times. Everyone has something to learn and teach. Congratulations to all the white belts who were awarded stripes tonight. While these stripes were definitely earned, we do well to remember that progression and development are about more than personal achievement. An award is a bestowal of honor and respect and with it comes a shared responsibility to the integrity of everything we do as a community. Keep coming back. Keep training. You have much to contribute and much to gain on your pathway forward. See you on the mats!

Respect is among the greatest lessons I have learned in more than a decade of BJJ training. Respect for yourself first and then for others. This is NOT a political post. It is a post about peace. When we view others around us as people and partners rather than objects and adversaries we eliminate violence from our lives and peace and understanding gain traction. At Sphygmus we work to use the word partner in place of opponent because it highlights the more comprehensive relationship we engage when living and training. At the end of every training session we straighten up our gis and belts and we bow to each other and to the various flags hanging on our academy wall. We do this to honor the unity that must prevail in order for our healthy relationships to continue. Whether it is a religious person bowing the head, kneeling, or prostrating, a performer giving a curtsey or a bow, a soldier giving a salute or even a friendly wave among neighbors, when we humble ourselves and recognize others we all win.

Colorful gis that will fade with time. White belts that will gain color. It's a beautiful transition. Here at Sphygmus our entire crew is vaccinated and wearing masks as we participate in a global social effort to put an end to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our commitment on the mats and off to the unions represented by flags behind us on the wall mean that we take action to protect them. Stay safe and roll smart.

Great training last night team! Our young and developing white belts came out in force last night. COVID-19 restrictions still have us on our toes and in masks, but since we believe in managing the distance we are taking this in stride! We are happy to participate in precautions to stay healthy for ourselves, but especially for others who might be immunocompromised or at higher risk. As Master Pedro Sauer says (paraphrased), after a lifetime of BJJ training, community stands out as one - if not the - greatest benefits. Regardless of our personal opinions and political views of the current situation we choose to stay united.

Do you remember your first breakfall? These young ladies will. If you find yourself quarantined with people who don't do BJJ you are now officially promoted to instructor. Get to training 😷!

Help others in need. Stay tuned for additional announcements in the coming days. Thank you for your continued support.
