Leavenworth Wilderness and Climbing Rangers The Leavenworth Wilderness and Climbing Rangers Jackson, and Glacier Peak Wilderness.

Encompassing some of the most popular hiking areas of Washington state, the Wenatchee River Ranger District (WRRD) contains three congressionally designated Wilderness areas: Alpine Lakes, Henry M. The legendary Enchantments Special Use Permit Area, which resides in Alpine Lakes Wilderness. The Leavenworth Wilderness and Climbing Rangers are dedicated to the preservation and protection of these Wi

lderness Areas on the Wenatchee River Ranger District. Rangers strive to accomplish this through education, site monitoring, and restoration work. The WRRD has become a regional and national destination for hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, and mountaineering. Thousands of individuals flock to the Wenatchee River Ranger District annually to partake in the outstanding recreation opportunities accessible on the district. The impacts caused by the increase in the visitor usage are a main duty of the rangers. The major impacts that have been noticed are de-vegetation, soil compaction, impacts to wildlife, safety concerns, and (over) use conflicts. Several rare and endangered plant species are threatened by overuse, this area has biological refuges of global importance, harboring species that are threatened or lost in other areas and offering hope for the future. Peregrine falcons and golden eagles, both protected species, often nest on several popular climbing areas/routes and their livelihood and the success of their Eyrie can be affected by climber interactions. Public safety concerns have arisen as well with an increase in accidents, injuries, and multiple helicopter evacuations each year on the district.

Hey folks- as we head into the later summer months the mountain’s conditions are changing ‼️The soft snow on Colchuck Glacier and the East route up Dragontail has melted and is now hard glacial ice. These routes are out of condition for those without a high degree of technical experience.
The mountains have been receiving a lot of afternoon thunderstorms. This often brings increased rock fall and slick surfaces. Many people have been caught in torrential downpours with no rain gear, don’t let this be you! Plan ahead and prepare! Happy adventuring 🥾🗻

Everybody’s favorite cairn on Aasgard; the last‼️Rangers put in hard work to dilliniate the route up Aasgard. The route is in good shape and we no longer advise traction or an ice axe if ascending the pass. The Inspiration Lake toilet has been uncovered so all upper elevation toilets are ready to be used. Snow still lingers in the upper and lower core. ❄️ Please make every effort stay on trail and when unsure, walk on durable surfaces which include snow and rock. Stepping on vegetation damages fragile alpine plants that have a short growing season. ☀️

Snow still loiters on the upper section of Aasgard. A slip and fall in this area would have serious consequences. Plan accordingly by carrying proper equipment ready for snow travel to build margins of safety on the route. Rangers contacted folks who successfully made it up the pass and most were surprised by the technical difficulty. They found that traction on their feet, trekking poles and for some ice axes were extremely useful for their ascent. Always check the weather as cold overnight temperatures will harden snow surfaces increasing the likelihood for slide for life conditions.
The Core Enchantments is completely snow covered. All upper elevation toilets are open and ready for use except for the one closest to Inspiration Lake.
Signs of increased visitor use were widespread. Please treat this area as a fragile alpine ecosystem. Let’s keep it clean for future generations!

Slips and slide for life conditions remain the primary concern for people traveling above 6,000 ft. Snow continues to linger on the upper half of Aasgard. Proper traction, ice axes, and the knowledge of self arresting are necessary. 🧊🪨⚠️

🌧️Vigorous weather systems continue to crash into the Washington Cascades prolonging springtime conditions in the mountains. The Cascade Crest encompasses areas on the Wenatchee River Ranger District from the Wenatchee Mountains to the Chiwakums, and north to Glacier Peak. This north to south topography orients itself to rain shadowing and deep spring snowpacks.

Rangers traveled up to Smithbrook trailhead and encountered snow 1 mile from the trailhead. This most likely mirrors other trailheads along the crest. The Smithbrook Trail and Pacific Crest Trail to Lake Valhalla have difficult travel conditions. Early morning snow was supportable and slippery, while afternoon conditions were unsupportable and slushy. Snowpack depth across the Cascade Crest above 5,000 feet, ranges from 1-8 feet.

Bring appropriate gear and plan your trips that align with your experience.

⚠️Aasgard pass condition as of May 26th.

This is no hiking route, mountaineering experience, like self-arrest practice and evaluating snow-related hazards, is required. This past weekend Rangers witnessed two climbers attempting Aasgard fall and uncontrollably slide into rocks. If planning to ascend the pass please have the proper gear which includes traction devices (such as crampons or microspikes depending on the mixed/varying conditions of Aasgard this time of year), ice axe and experience self arresting a fall. In the Core Enchantments, the trail and toilets are covered in deep snow. Bring a way to navigate in whiteout conditions as mountain weather can deteriorate rapidly and a WAG bag to properly dispose of waste.❄️

As we kick off another season in the mountains, rangers are heading back out into the field to monitor conditions and maintain the trails. Ranger Julien has just returned from Colchuck Lake after a patrol that involved essential early-season trail work, digging out toilets and gathering condition updates to share:

🌲Trails:

▪️ Stuart Lake Trail (1599) to Colchuck Trail Junction -- Mostly snow free with one lingering patch near the junction.

▪️ Colchuck/Stuart Junction to Colchuck Lake -- The trail remains 70% snow-covered with shin to knee-deep postholing. The trail is mostly packed down, making microspikes beneficial.

▪️ Trail around Colchuck Lake -- 90 % snow covered, the summer trail is buried, multiple boot paths around the lake can be hard to follow. Knee-deep post-holing is common, the snow was breakable and allowed for post-holing, even in early morning hours.

⚠️Aasgard was exposed to full sun by 10 am, multiple slides were observed on Colchuck Glacier and in the Aasgard area over the past few days, expect this to continue as warmer spring weather continues. Use extra caution when climbing or descending snow due to many hazards such as exposed or hidden creeks & waterfalls, open holes, thin snow and hidden rock. Please utilize the recommended travel route in attempting Aasgard Pass and double check conditions. It is imperative to have the necessary skills and equipment (and know how to use them).

🌊A majority of the lake remains frozen, but not supportable as the edges are melted out. Water is accessible on the lake edges and through some seasonal streams along the trail. Most campsites still hold 1-3 feet of snow, with more in shaded areas.

🦟Ticks are out, and mosquitos are hatching. Wildflowers can be found at the lower elevations.

🚻Toilets:

▪️ Toilets at lower elevations along the Stuart Lake trail (near the junction) are accessible.

▪️ The first toilet at Colchuck Lake has been dug out of snow and is available for use. Please utilize these facilities to help keep the wilderness clean.

▪️ The remaining toilets, including the core and other high-elevation areas, remain under significant snow. Packing out all waste using WAG bags or similar means is currently required.

❄️Weather/Conditions:
Conditions in the mountains, especially this time of year, can change rapidly. We strongly encourage all visitors to check the latest mountain forecasts before heading out and to come prepared for varying weather and trail conditions. This includes bringing appropriate gear for the area you will be traveling to and knowing how to use it.

🐻As always, we ask that you practice Leave No Trace principles. Pack out what you pack in, respect wildlife and be considerate of others while out on the trail. As the season progresses, we will continue to provide more updates on conditions.

Howdy hikers! Every summer the Wenatchee River Ranger District has the opportunity to host 3-4 passionate, full-time wilderness/backcountry interns. If you or someone you know is eager to make a difference in protecting our natural landscapes, the US Forest Service is seeking such volunteers! This opportunity has paved the way for many to transition into full-time Wilderness Rangers and develop resumes/careers within outdoor recreation and public land management.

The role involves participating in multi-day backcountry patrols alongside experienced wilderness rangers (performing visitor education, light trail work, trash and human waste management, & area restoration and rehabilitation efforts). Duties are primarily focused within the Enchantments Permit Area, gaining valuable hands-on experience in conservation efforts within a fragile, alpine area.

Priority is given to folks who can commit to longer timeframes, but a minimum 6-week commitment is needed for housing benefits to be included. Happy trails!🌲

The gate will close at 8-mile road on 11-1-23 at ~0830. Please obey all signage if vehicle is parked at the TH prior to this time. Access to the Enchantments still remains possible from Snow Lakes Trailhead. This annual closing is to maintain the integrity of the road, and to manage the safety of the public from adverse weather conditions.
