The needs of the horse always come before competitive goals, fitting in with the barn crowd, looking good, or having fun. We brought the horse into our lives- they are not a tool. No one and nothing comes before their emotional and physical well-being. This might mean sacrificing a lot, but it’s our responsibility to become emotionally resilient for our horses. If you’re just looking for fun or to fit in, a motorcycle might be a better fit.

FINDING OURSELVES THROUGH HORSES.

In this crazy world we live in we are so used to being fake and hiding how we really feel...and getting away with it.

We are used to mainly using words to communicate and because of that kinda forget about the rest of our body other then smiling here and there or gesturing with our hands.
A lot of times we keep things to ourselves for the fear of sounding stupid or someone not liking our opinion. Long story short we are good at faking.

But horses listen to the part of us that we hide.
Horses don't listen to our words. They listen to our heart and our soul. We can't hide from them
No matter how hard we try.

I think its part of the reason horses can be so challenging for us. They won't let us lie and even more importantly they won't let us lie to ourselves.
They force us to be true to ourselves.

They teach us that if you want something you have to ask clearly and have no doubts in yourself but at the same time have patience and consideration.

They teach us that you need to acknowledge your feelings and that your feelings are your responsibility.

They teach us that we need to accept our flaws so that we can correct them and move on with our life instead of accepting them and letting them control.

Horses can be so difficult to work with because when we work with horses they take our flaws and become them, and because of that they force us to acknowledge our flaws and change ourselves.

Everyone who loves horses must read this!

Everyone who loves horses must read this!

You are the steward of your horse.
You are responsible for their health, happiness, and wellbeing.
And, you are responsible for their behavior.

People everywhere complain about their horses behavior- or smirk at their troubles.

“That dummy’s gonna be tired if he keeps pacing the fence line like that!”
“He’s being ornery!”
“He’s lazy and doesn’t want to work!”
“This mare is such a witch!”

Descriptions of the horse’s behavior in this light paint a picture of a rider who perceives themselves as the victim of the horse, instead of the steward. There is nothing that takes your power away faster than being a victim-

The horse did not choose to come into our world. It’s us who put ourselves into theirs- and so it is our responsibly to learn about them, and to become better humans for them. It is up to us to become better riders, better handlers, better caretakers. It is up to us to learn about their behavior, physical needs, anatomy, and care.

Being a steward is so much more than making a horse do what we want- it is about guiding, preparing, and caring for the horse’s needs.
