Get Ready for the 2026 Summer at the SNC Open House in Oak Brook Il. We invite Campers and Parents to attend a Swift Nature Camp Meet & Greet—a relaxed, in-person opportunity to get comfortable before camp begins.

At our Meet & Greet, parents will have an opportunity to learn about a day in the life at SNC. directly with Lonnie & Jeff and they will answer parent FAQ's. At the same time, campers head out with counselors for games and a short hike—so they begin building comfort and confidence right away.

Upcoming Meet & Greet Opportunities:

Sunday, May 4 – 4:30–5:30: PM

📍 Location: Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve, Oak Brook, IL

Families consistently tell us this simple step makes a big difference—especially for first-time campers—helping children arrive at camp feeling confident and ready to succeed. Hope to see you there

Happy Earth Day
Today is the perfect time to try something new! Here are 4 quick ideas to help the Earth:
• Start a small pollinator garden or plant some wildflower seeds.
• Go on a "litter walk" in your favorite local park or down your street.
• Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
• Set up a backyard compost bin for your kitchen scraps

Try and be thankful every day for the little things the earth provides: a cool bird, a warm breeze or even that spring snow you won't need to shovel.

🌲 A Note from Lonnie: Choosing Your Child’s Next Summer Home

To our friends in the Camp Kupugani community, Join us tonight's Zoom Meeting 4/13/26 8pm
https://tinyurl.com/3y5ep6hb

For over 30 years, I’ve had the privilege of watching children transform under the canopy of the Northwoods. During much of that time, Jeff and I have called Kevin and Natasha friends. We’ve always admired the heart of Camp Kupugani—its commitment to empathy, identity, and community.

As you look for a new summer home, I know the weight of that decision. You aren't just looking for "childcare" or "activities"; you are looking for a place that will protect your child's spirit while helping them grow.
Why Swift Nature Camp (SNC) is the Right Fit:

After three decades in camping, here is my advice on what to look for, and how we meet those needs at SNC:

Look for a Culture of Kindness: In 30 years, I’ve learned that children only take risks when they feel safe. At SNC, we are intentionally non-competitive. Whether a child is trying archery for the first time or performing in a skit, the goal isn't to be "the best"—it’s to be their best, most authentic self.

The Power of Small: I’ve stayed committed to keeping SNC small. Like Kupugani, we believe every child should be known by name, not just by cabin number. With a small group, we can offer the individual attention that shy or nervous campers need to thrive.

A "Bruises, Not Scars" Philosophy: We believe in "healthy challenges." We want kids to get a little dirty, try things that make them nervous, and occasionally fail—but in a way that builds resilience (the bruise) rather than fear (the scar).

Real Connection (No Screens!): We are passionate about the "Nature" in our name. Unplugging isn't just about taking away phones; it’s about replacing them with the sound of loons, the sight of bald eagles, and the warmth of a real campfire conversation.

Director Involvement: After 30 years, I’m not just in the office. Jeff and I are in the thick of it—leading songs, helping with the petting zoo, and listening to campers. When you call us, you talk to the people who are actually on the ground with your kids.

We know we can never replace the specific magic of Kupugani, but we would be honored to carry that torch forward for your family. Our goal is to provide a soft landing and a new horizon for your campers.

PS-We even have a "camp motorcoach" from the Chicagoland area (Schaumburg/Bolingbrook) to make the 6-hour drive easier for Kupugani families!

Lonnie & Jeff, for over 30 years have been the directors at Swift Nature Camp. They cultivated a tech-free sanctuary, helping thousands of children build confidence, independence, and lasting friendships in the Wisconsin Northwoods. Focused on non-competitive personal growth, they foster a deep, hands-on appreciation for nature through activities like swimming, canoeing, archery, and caring for animals, allowing kids to disconnect from screens and connect with the outdoor world. Campers love the camp zoo.

Technology Free Environment: The camp prohibits phones and electronics, ensuring a "back to basics" experience.
Hands-on Nature & Animals: Campers engage directly with the environment, including caring for animals in the nature center.

Small, Supportive Community: An intentionally small, family-like atmosphere allows every child to be seen and supported in developing independence.

Traditional Fun: Activities emphasize physical, creative fun, including campfires, songs, and skits. Plus over 70 land and water activities.

Lonnie and Jeff have created a unique "bubble" that balances safety with adventure, allowing children to develop self-reliance and environmental stewardship.

During times like these when the world feels uncertain or even filled with chaos and injustice, today is especially important. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is honored with a national holiday not simply because of what he said, but because of what he stood for—dignity, justice, and the courage to imagine something better, even when the world pushed back.
His dream was rooted in real struggle and lived experience, and it continues to ask something of us: to listen more closely, to treat one another with greater care, and to keep working toward communities where everyone truly belongs. Taking time to reflect on why we pause today feels especially important—and deeply worth doing together.
