🌟THROWBACK THURSDAY ~ ALUMNI STYLE🌟

Name: Dan Scanlon

Major while at Rider: Secondary education and English

Years involved in Rider Unified: 2012-2016

Why you joined Unified: My sister has special needs and participated in Challenger League (similar to Unified) so I wanted to help individuals with special needs like others did with my sister.

Favorite season: Basketball - I’m a big basketball fan and generally just found it more fun than soccer.

How Unified changed you: I think Unified teaches a lot of patience and empathy. We might take for granted the ability to kick a ball or dribble, or find a group to play a pick up game with, but these seemingly little things can be major milestones and accomplishments for a unified athlete. I think this program helps the Rider members gain a lot of perspective.

Continuation of learnings from Rider Unified: I have given a lot of advice to my school district as they’ve began a Unified PE class.

What you’re doing now: I teach high school English at Metuchen High School, and I’m married to Rider alum Erin Smythe, who happens to be a founding member of Rider Unified!

On Sunday, October 27th, 7 New Jersey Colleges and High Schools overcame the rain stop as a modified Unified Cup Soccer tournament was held at the Special Olympics New Jersey Complex. Photos by Marco Catini
