Rally in the Valley

The Valley Championships were held last weekend, and Jayhawk Tennis Center had ELEVEN players qualify, and one from every age group. Amazing, especially since each division only takes 16 players. Here were our representatives:

Megan Sweeney - Girls 12
Coraline Albrecht - Girls 14
Eli Ward - Girls 16
Penny Reed - Girls 16
Emma Sweeney - Girls 18

Aarnav Garikipati - Boys 12
Miles Markham - Boys 14
Alex Birkbeck - Boys 14
Ishaan Rao - Boys 16
Wyatt Markham - Boys 16
JohnPaul Huston - Boys 18

Simply qualifying for this tournament is an impressive feat, and this year we also had two players who made the finals of their brackets: Eli took second in the Girls 16 doubles, while Wyatt nearly pulled off the sweep, winning singles and placing second in the Boys 16’s. Not bad for a kid ALMOST 14 1/2!

Congratulations to all who played, let’s keep the summer rolling!!

Over the past 2 weekends, a half-dozen of Academy kids competed in the beginning levels of competition...Junior Circuits and L7s! Kudos to all for putting your skills to the test!

Great work at the L7 in Merriam where Oliver Hester came in 2nd in Boy's 18s, Anton Milakhin won the north B12's compass draw, and Katya Milakhin won her G12's group.

Oliver Hester, Liam Counley, Sam Graber, Everly Leonard all competed in Merriam Junior Circuit....everyone's first-ever tournament. Another highlight was Liam went 2 for 2 in 10 & under orange.

Way to keep competing!

The first weekend, Wren Stultz headed south to Texas where she won the southwest draw in the G12's.

The next weekend, Coraline & Clark Albrecht, Alex Birkbeck and Lexi Shino competed in Springfield, MO. In the B14's, Alex took 1st in BOTH doubles and singles. Coraline also won doubles in the G14's and placed second in singles. Lexi came in 2nd in G12's doubles.

Lastly, Eli Risley headed to Lincoln, NE and made it to consolation finals in B16's.

Great work to everyone on competing these past few weekends!

Jayhawk Open in Topeka was a great success! Congratulations goes out to Kansas Women's Tennis Team very own Anna Putilina, who won the women's singles title, while Coach Dan's son, Cooper Wostendick, won the men's single and doubles titles.

Shout out to Coach Bryson for great competition in Doubles and to Micah and Eliyah Ward and their friends for bringing the Junior player spirit to the tournament!

Memorial Day weekend was also a hit for L6s in the area. It was a great effort from everyone, and here’s how it shook out:

Jacob Clutter, Anton Milakhin and Clark Albrecht had tough competition in the B12’s; with Jacob taking home the 1st place finish.

Cormac Wilson joined in on the fun in B14’s.

In the B16’s, Sonam King, Andrew McCall and Sam Grindal competed. Andrew placed 1st, and Sonam made it to the consolation finals.

In the G12’s, Annelise Leonard, Kyra Subelka, and Annika Kaleshefski all played. Annelise won the division, and Kyra made it to consolation finals.

What a round of tennis to go with a fantastic Memorial Day Weekend!

It was a banner year for our Jayhawk Tennis Center boys in high school tennis… literally. We had players across the divisions qualify for state, with some pretty amazing results! Here are the highlights:

6A - 8 of our boys qualified for the state championships, and ALL of them came away with some form of hardware. From LHS, Jack Bauch and Koh Brewer continued to improve as the season went on. Not only did they place 7th in doubles, without their win at the end of the first day the Free State team wouldn’t have finished as high.

And how did they do? Better than any previous Free State team in history, matching the runner up finish that the girls posted in the fall. All entrants contributed, as they edged out Shawnee Mission East by a single point. Aiden Hixson and Eli Risley picked up two wins, falling just short of making the medal rounds. Drew Harrison and Andrew McCall placed 12th in doubles as well. Singles continued to power the team, as Ishaan Rao placed 4th and Micah Ward claimed the championship. For Micah it capped off an undefeated season in his first and only high school season ever, not only helping the team to its best finish, but also becoming the first boy to claim the title for Free State. As if that weren’t enough, it also helped ink his family in the record books — his sister, Eli, won the girls singles title in the fall, marking the first time in 6A history that siblings have won in the same school year!!

5A - Johnny Vogel and Baird Greenamyre placed 6th in doubles for Piper.

4A - Wyatt Shultz capped off a stellar high school career of his own, finally winning the singles title after 3 years as runner-up. In another cool family fact, he is the first Parsons singles champion since his father, Chris!

3-2-1 A - Gabe Rinnert (Seabury) and Warren Wiedeman (Perry-Lecompton) both qualified.

Congratulations to everyone who made it, we’re so proud of you for all the hard work it took to accomplish your goals!!
