Let’s be real,
A lot of us romanticize the idea of homesteading.
Fresh bread. Garden-grown meals. Barefoot babies running through the pasture…
But the truth?
Doing it alone is expensive, overwhelming, and honestly not practical for 90% of us.
People reach out all the time saying,
“You’re living my dream. I want a homeschool on my land too!”
And I love that. I do.
But let’s be clear…
I am not the sourdough girl.
I’m not singing in the garden while the cows low gently behind me.
I’m answering messages from five platforms at once,
Scheduling tours, rewriting handbooks, building systems, coaching teams, and constantly trying to stay one step ahead of the chaos.
My darling husband..
He’s building 24/7. Literally.
Fences. Walls. Classrooms. Structures.
And yes. he’s grumpy.
Because he didn’t sign up to build buildings.
He signed up to fish with our son and tend to his cows. And that’s pretty hard
To this survive on that life.
But right now, he’s stuck building the bones of it,
Because we said yes to something bigger than ourselves.
And what broke me a little the other day…
I asked my son,
“Do you like when Mum and Dad are teaching classes?”
And he said,
“Yeah… I love it, because that’s the only time you have time for me.”
That’s the kind of honesty that pulls your heart out.
This isn’t romantic.
It’s not cute.
It’s not what Instagram makes it look like.
But it’s real.
And it’s rooted.
And we’re doing it because we were called to.
Because God placed a vision in us that we couldn’t ignore, even when it hurts, even when it costs us more than anyone sees.
So no, we’re not living off-grid in a dreamy cabin.
We’re not selling our beef at the market.
We’re knee deep in work, in sacrifice, in obedience.
And somehow, in the middle of it, we’re still showing up for our kids,
building something that we pray will last for them.
If you’re dreaming of your own homeschool homestead,
Know this:
It’s not for the faint of heart.
You’ll need help.
You’ll need support.
And you’ll need God.
But if you’re willing to say yes to the call,
even when it costs you…
you just might build something eternal.
