Big News!
We are proud to announce the arrival of Breaking Wave Martial Arts home of The Chinese Martial Arts Academy (CMAA) and Fighting Spirit Karate - North (FSK-N)!
Please follow Breaking Wave to get all information and updates for FSK-N.
Why Breaking Wave?
Essentially, since opening CMAA in 2011 my personal interest in martial arts has expanded beyond art’s particular to China. Over that time CMAA has also become home to many different programs with arts from a wide range of origins.
In addition to our Kungfu and Tai Chi programs, CMAA has also become the home of Albany Samurai Arts, and most recently Fighting Spirit Karate - North.
I wanted to re create the space to be an all inclusive entity that can feel like a home to a diverse array of programs and practices.
What happens?
Essentially, all the things you enjoy about what we do will remain unchanged. What you depend on in terms of classes, content, instructors and culture will all remain the same.
Primarily, we will revise our website and informational materials to help everyone navigate and understand what we offer better.
I would also like to simplify our membership types to encourage people to explore what we have to offer and not limit their participation across programs.
What’s in a name?
I chose Breaking Wave for a number of reasons.
To begin with, the name is not art/style/origin specific and can therefore be more inclusive of the variety of programs we now offer and may offer in the future.
Beyond that I’ve been inspired by the philosophy of The Great Wave. This Great Wave symbolizes the fact that no matter how great an obstacle or problem you may encounter, with patience, determination and perseverance you can rise above and overcome it.
Additionally, I think beyond that I’ve always appreciated Bruce Lee’s “Be Water” speech. That essentially water can, flow or crash but also that it’s formless, shapeless and therefor adaptable.
These things speak to me as a martial artist and as a business owner, in that as a martial arts school we need to have perseverance and adaptability (especially as the past several years have highlighted)!
Thank you for taking the time to read about these new and exciting updates!
Only more exciting things coming our way!
