Staying Calm Under Pressure: Lessons in Self-Protection from the Debate Stage.
OPINION - By J. Taylor, September 10th, 2024
As millions of Americans gear up to watch tonight’s presidential debate between Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, one thing will be under intense scrutiny: the candidates' ability to stay calm under pressure. Composure in high-stakes moments reveals much about a person's capacity to lead effectively.
But this ability to remain composed goes beyond politics. It mirrors the critical need for calm and clarity in life-threatening situations—moments where personal safety and the safety of loved ones are on the line. Whether it’s an attempted robbery or a home invasion, being able to keep your head clear can mean the difference between survival and tragedy.
Staying Prepared in Today’s America
In today’s reality, the need for preparation is more pressing than ever. Crime rates are rising across cities in the U.S., and the challenges presented by an open southern border continue to grow. With hundreds of thousands of people entering the country, the risk that some are here with harmful intentions is undeniable. The result is a greater emphasis on personal responsibility for safety, especially as communities become more unpredictable.
For many Americans, owning a firearm is a key part of that responsibility. But simply owning one isn’t enough. Training is essential to ensuring you know how to use it effectively under duress. The training should simulate the kinds of high-pressure situations where every second counts, and where mental and physical preparation must work in harmony.
As we head into tonight’s debate, it is my hope that Donald Trump approaches it with a strategy grounded in calmness and composure. Traditionally, his style has leaned toward name-calling and personal attacks, but this may be the perfect opportunity for a shift. By allowing the audience to assess for themselves the flaws or exaggerated statements from Kamala Harris, Trump could benefit more by taking a measured, unifying approach—one that seeks to bridge a divided America. Such a strategy would be unexpected, powerful, and likely more effective in winning over the public. For the Republican Party, adopting this kind of strategic preparation could be a game-changer.
What do you think about tonight’s debate and it’s impact for either side, Democrats or Republicans? How do you train to remain calm and effective in high-stress situations? Let us know your thoughts.
