And, above all, character. These are the values that set the game of hockey, and those who play it, apart from any other. They are also the values that the Hobey Baker Award honors each year. The most coveted award in collegiate hockey, the Hobey Baker Award is given to the top NCAA men’s ice hockey player in the nation. Winners are chosen not for raw skill or stats or character alone, though thos

e are important. They are selected for everything they do. Candidates must:

• Exhibit strength and character, both on and off the ice
• Contribute to the integrity of the team
• Display outstanding skills in all phases of the game
• Show scholastic achievement and sportsmanship

Candidates must also comply with all NCAA rules, be full-time students in an accredited NCAA college or university, and complete 50% or more of the season. the Hobey Baker Award was named for hockey legend and World War I veteran Hobey Baker. Universally recognized as the best amateur player in the United States, Baker was the ultimate gentleman sportsman, always playing the game with courage, honor, and humility.

Character doesn't begin when the spotlight finds you. It's built long before that—in the lessons learned at home, the people who surround you and the values you carry with you.

For 2026 Hobey Baker Memorial Award recipient Max Plante, family has been an important part of that journey.

The Plante family is a reminder that while one name may be engraved on the trophy, the character behind that name is often shaped by a lifetime of support, example and shared values.

For Abbey, character came down to something simple: how you treated the people around you.

She lived that out by making sure every teammate felt included, showing respect to opponents and officials, and always being willing to learn and adjust. She carried that same example into the Marshall youth program, where she gave back as a student coach.

The Hobey Baker Memorial Award is about more than what happens on the ice. 🏒

Each year, the award recognizes an exceptional NCAA men’s hockey player who represents the very best of the game. Not only through skill and performance, but through character, leadership, sportsmanship and integrity.

To become a Hobey Baker Award recipient is to join a legacy of players who have left their mark on college hockey while representing something bigger than themselves.
