The Guerrero Family and Latino Basketball Association wants to extend condolences to the Nunez Family.
To say myself or the LBA wouldn’t have accomplished any success without the ground work Tommy laid before would be an understatement.
The year was 1991, my first Tommy and the only one I ever played without me being part of SANGRE LATINA. Meeting Tommy was surreal and my friendship with the Nunez Family began. My oldest daughter Alexus wasn’t even born yet. All 3 of my daughters were born into attending the TOMMY every Labor Day Weekend. My daughters grew up in Phoenix Labor Day weekends with SANGRE LATINA and of course the famous green chile burritos in the snack bar.
Many of you don’t remember the days of Santa Fe / NM, The Original Alma Latina (RIP Joe Molina / however he didn’t start Alma Latina), The Gamblers, Houston Monarchs, East Los, EAST LA (Dave Martinez), JR Lakers, Nosotros, Mis Hermanos, The Matador Sponsored Team, Viva Zapata, and many more when there was just one division. And who could forget the Banquet on Saturday night!!! Free food and beer!
In closing i just want to personally thank everything Tommy and the Nunez Family has done for the Hispanic / Latino Culture through basketball. And as many Latino players travel to play in tournaments this weekend - I challenge you to HONOR Tommy by not yelling at refs and maybe just thank them for being there at the tournament. And maybe just go out of your way to say hello to someone the way Tommy would greet you when you walked in North HS!
Rest in peace Tommy Nunez.
The world of basketball will never be the same without you and we aspire to do what you did as well.
